For Carrie, counseling is more than a profession. It is a calling centered on helping people heal, grow, and move toward healthier relationships.
Her work is especially focused on supporting marriages affected by infidelity, helping individuals and couples understand healthy boundaries, and applying those principles in real life-at home, at church, and at work.
Carrie founded Truth in Love Counseling in 2011, and through that journey, her role has grown beyond counseling alone. She has also supported other professionals through clinical supervision and continued investing in the emotional, relational, and spiritual wellbeing of the people she serves.
At the heart of her work is a simple conviction:
Helping people grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally is meaningful work.
As Carrie puts it, using her spiritual giftedness to help others heal and grow is something she considers a privilege.
And for her, Truth in Love is not simply where she works.
It is the place she believes God made for her.

Sometimes comfort arrives with four paws.
Meet Maple - a small part of the warm, caring environment at Truth in Love Counseling & Care.
Beginning counseling can bring a mix of emotions. For some people, simply walking into a new space and preparing to talk about something personal can feel unfamiliar or vulnerable.
That is why the environment surrounding counseling matters too.
A welcoming room, a calm atmosphere, a compassionate conversation and sometimes the presence of a furry friend can add a little warmth to the experience.
Maple isn't here to replace the important work that happens in counseling.
She is simply part of what makes the Truth in Love environment feel a little more like us: caring, approachable, and human.
And, admittedly, she is very good at making people smile.

Starting counseling can come with a lot of questions.
What do I say first?
Will I be judged?
How long will counseling take?
Do I have to talk about faith?
These are completely normal questions.
You do not need to arrive with a polished explanation of what is going on. You do not need to know exactly how many sessions you will need. And you do not have to discuss faith unless it is something that is meaningful to you and relevant to your counseling goals.
A good counseling relationship should give you room to be honest, ask questions, move at a pace that feels appropriate, and explore what matters most to you.
There is no single timeline that fits everyone.
Some people come to counseling for a specific concern. Others are working through patterns that have developed over years. Some need support during a difficult season, while others are looking for deeper emotional, relational, or spiritual growth.
What matters is that the process is individualized.
If you are considering counseling but feel unsure about how to begin, remember this:
You do not have to have everything figured out before your first conversation.
Sometimes starting with one honest question is enough.

Good counseling begins before solutions are discussed.
It begins with listening.
Listening to what has happened. What feels difficult now. What you have already tried. What matters to you. What you believe. What you are afraid of. And what you hope might become different.
At Truth in Love Counseling & Care, our commitment is to approach that process with compassion, integrity, respect, and professional care.
That means recognizing that every person who enters counseling brings a unique story not simply a problem to solve.
It means being honest about limitations, creating room for difficult conversations without judgment, recognizing strengths alongside struggles, and working collaboratively toward healing and growth.
Trust is not something we assume.
It is something built through consistency, honesty, safety, empathy, and the willingness to speak truth with care.
Because people deserve more than simply being heard.
They deserve to know that what they share matters.

We often want healing to have a clear timeline.
We want to know when the anxiety will stop, when the relationship will feel different, when the painful memory will lose its weight, or when we will finally feel like ourselves again.
But meaningful change rarely follows a perfectly straight line.
There may be breakthroughs and setbacks. Some patterns take time to understand. Some wounds need space to be processed. And sometimes progress is quiet recognizing a trigger sooner, setting a healthier boundary, responding differently during conflict, asking for help, or extending yourself more grace than you could before.
Counseling is not about promising a quick fix.
It is about creating space for understanding, developing healthier patterns, processing what needs attention, and continuing to move toward greater emotional and relational health.
Progress doesn't always mean everything suddenly feels easy.
Sometimes it simply means you're responding differently to something that once kept you stuck.
Healing is a process. And small steps still count.

College can be one of the most exciting seasons of life, but it can also come with a level of pressure that is easy to underestimate.
Assignments, exams, work, finances, friendships, family expectations, changing routines, and uncertainty about the future can all build on top of each other. Sometimes the stress is obvious. Other times, it shows up more quietly through trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, low motivation, irritability, anxiety, or feeling emotionally drained.
It is important to remember that struggling does not mean you are failing at college.
Mental health support can help students slow things down, understand what is contributing to the pressure, develop healthier coping strategies, and make more intentional decisions about how to move forward.
You do not have to wait until everything feels unmanageable before asking for support.
Sometimes the strongest next step is simply recognizing that you do not have to carry everything by yourself.

Credentials and professional experience matter when choosing a counselor.
But there is another part of counseling that matters too: the relationship you build with the person sitting across from you.
Counseling often asks you to talk about experiences, fears, relationships, beliefs, or parts of yourself that may be difficult to put into words. Doing that work is different when you feel respected, heard, understood, and able to be honest.
The “right” counselor does not mean someone who agrees with everything you say or always tells you what you want to hear.
It means finding a professional relationship where there is enough trust and safety to explore difficult things, enough honesty to support meaningful growth, and an approach that makes sense for your needs.
Finding that fit may involve asking questions about a counselor's experience, areas of focus, approach to therapy, and if important to you how faith can be incorporated into counseling.
Therapy is collaborative.
Finding someone you can genuinely work with can be an important part of the process.

Most relationships do not suddenly become disconnected overnight.
More often, the signs build slowly.
The same arguments keep returning. Conversations become defensive. One person shuts down while the other pushes harder to be heard. Emotional closeness fades, and eventually the relationship can begin to feel more like a shared routine than a partnership.
These patterns do not always mean a relationship is failing.
But they can be signs that the way you are communicating, responding, or reconnecting may need attention.
Couples counseling can help create space to slow these patterns down and understand what is happening underneath them.
Sometimes beneath frustration is hurt. Beneath withdrawal is fear. Beneath repeated conflict is a need for connection that has become difficult to express clearly.
The goal is not to create a relationship where no disagreement ever happens.
The goal is to help couples communicate more openly, understand one another more deeply, repair after conflict, and rebuild trust where it has been strained.
Support does not have to be the final step.
Sometimes it is the step that helps two people reconnect before the distance grows further.

Communication problems are not always about a lack of communication.
Sometimes couples are talking constantly but neither person feels heard.
A simple disagreement becomes defensive. One person pursues the conversation while the other withdraws. Old hurts enter new arguments. Assumptions replace questions. Eventually, both people may begin protecting themselves instead of trying to understand each other.
The visible conflict is often only part of the story.
Underneath it may be disappointment, fear, unmet needs, resentment, insecurity, or a longing for connection that has become difficult to express.
Couples counseling can help slow those patterns down.
It can create space to recognize what happens during conflict, understand what each partner is trying to communicate beneath the reaction, and practice healthier ways of listening, responding, repairing, and reconnecting.
The goal isn't a relationship without disagreement.
It is learning how to move through difficult conversations without losing sight of each other.

College can be exciting and still be difficult.
Behind classes, deadlines, friendships, work, finances, family expectations, and decisions about the future, many students are carrying pressures that aren't obvious from the outside.
Sometimes it looks like anxiety before every assignment. Sometimes it is difficulty sleeping, losing motivation, feeling isolated, becoming overwhelmed by decisions, or simply realizing that you don’t feel like yourself anymore.
Independence does not mean having to figure everything out alone.
Counseling can provide a confidential space to slow down, understand what you are experiencing, develop healthier ways of managing pressure, and navigate this season with greater clarity.
Asking for support isn't giving up your independence.
Sometimes, it is part of learning how to take care of yourself.
For students in the Bloomington-Normal community, support can be closer than you think.
