MYTH: “Memory records events exactly as they happened.”

FACT: Human memory is reconstructive.

Rather than storing an experience like a video file, memory involves encoding, storing, and later retrieving information. During recall, details can be influenced by factors such as attention, expectations, emotions, later information, and the passage of time.

This is one reason two people can remember the same event differently, and why confidence in a memory does not always guarantee complete accuracy.

Memory is an important cognitive process, but it is not a perfect recording system.

MYTH: “People never change.”

FACT: Human behavior can change.

People's behavior is influenced by many factors, including learning, environment, relationships, life experiences, motivation, and repeated patterns of behavior.

Change can be gradual and may require consistent effort and new experiences. At the same time, not every behavior changes simply because someone wants it to.

An important distinction in psychology is between the possibility of change and evidence of change.

Behavior over time provides more information than promises alone.

MYTH: “You have to feel confident before you take action.”

FACT: Confidence and action can influence each other.

People often develop greater confidence through experience, practice, learning, and successfully navigating challenges. This means confidence does not always have to come before taking the first step.

For example, someone learning a new skill may initially feel uncertain. With repeated practice and experience, their sense of competence may increase.

Confidence isn't necessarily the starting point.

Sometimes, experience helps build confidence.

MYTH: “You have to vent to feel better.”

FACT: Talking about emotions can be helpful, but repeatedly focusing on anger or frustration does not necessarily make those feelings go away.

Research on emotion regulation suggests that how we respond to and think about an emotional experience matters. Simply repeating the story may sometimes maintain attention on the upsetting event rather than helping us move forward.

A more educational way to think about emotional processing is:

Notice the emotion → understand what triggered it → identify what you need → consider what action is helpful.

MYTH: “Multitasking makes you more productive.”

FACT: When we try to handle multiple attention-demanding tasks at once, the brain often switches attention rapidly between them rather than processing both tasks simultaneously.

These attention switches can make it harder to concentrate and may increase the likelihood of errors.

For many tasks, focusing on one activity at a time can support more sustained attention and efficiency.

One of the biggest myths: "The therapist just sits there."

A therapy session may include:
✔ Learning coping skills
✔ Understanding emotional patterns
✔ Practicing healthier thinking
✔ Processing difficult experiences
✔ Building confidence

Therapy is a collaborative process designed around your goals, not a one-size-fits-all conversation.

Liking things neat is NOT the same as OCD.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder often includes:
🧠 Intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions)
followed by:
🔄 Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions)

People with OCD usually recognize these thoughts don't make sense, but that doesn't make them easier to stop.

Effective treatments are available, such as ERP, and many people experience significant improvement.

Trauma changes the brain, and recovery is possible.

PTSD can develop after:
• Car accidents
• Medical trauma
• Abuse
• Childhood experiences
• Sudden loss
• Violence

Trauma affects everyone differently. There is no "right" way to respond.

Therapy can help your brain process experiences instead of constantly reliving them.

Your brain isn't being dramatic, it may be trying to protect you.

Many people believe anxiety is simply "overthinking." In reality, anxiety can affect your body just as much as your thoughts.

Signs may include:
• Racing heart
• Trouble sleeping
• Muscle tension
• Constant uncontrollable worrying
• Feeling on edge even when nothing seems "wrong"

Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it.
