A burn can heal, but getting a child back to feeling like themselves again can take time.

That’s why our pediatric burn team supports children and families throughout recovery.

Dr. Steven Kahn and our specialists care for everything from minor burns to complex injuries, with follow-up care and rehabilitation focused on helping each child get back to school, activities and everyday life.

We’re also expanding that support through our work with Shriners Children's, connecting patients and families with additional expertise and resources through a dedicated outpatient burn clinic.

Dr. Chad Crigger has been caring for Benjamin from the very beginning.

Born with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC), he has undergone several procedures at MUSC, beginning with a bladder closure at just 4 months old and most recently returning for another repair just before his third birthday.

His mom says he's usually apprehensive around doctors and nurses, but their experience at MUSC has been different.

There will be more checkups ahead as Benjamin gets older, but his family knows they’ll always have familiar faces like Dr. Crigger to welcome them back.

A new $100,000 grant will help advance the search for better ways to treat childhood cancer at MUSC.

Yesterday, Hyundai Hope On Wheels joined us at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital to present the grant and hear from Dr. Denis Guttridge and Dr. Jacqueline Kraveka about the research their teams are leading.

Afterward, patients and families joined our doctors and researchers for the handprint ceremony, adding their prints to a car that travels the country in support of kids with cancer.

We’re grateful to Hyundai Hope on Wheels and their nationwide dealers for this investment, and to the MUSC Foundation for helping connect donor and sponsor support with the research and care happening here.

We had some familiar faces from the Marvel and Star Wars universes stop by MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital!

Our patients got to meet the characters, spend time together and choose a few action figures to take home.

Visits like this are part of the fun our child life team brings to our kids, helping them stay connected to the things they enjoy while they’re with us.

When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, there can be a lot more to care for than just their physical health.

That’s where pediatric palliative care can help.

From the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment, it can help manage pain and other symptoms while also providing emotional and spiritual support for the child and the people who love them.

“Palliative care is a really beautiful medical specialty that is focused on helping people with serious illness and their loved ones live as well as possible for as long as possible,” said Dr. Conrad Williams, medical director of the Palliative Care Program at MUSC Health.

Kids aren't simply smaller versions of adults, especially when it comes to the brain and spine.

Their bodies are still growing, their brains are still developing and conditions can affect children differently depending on their age. That's why pediatric neurosurgery requires care specifically designed for infants, children and teens.

At MUSC, Dr. Ramin Eskandari and the rest of our pediatric neurosurgery team care for children with conditions ranging from hydrocephalus and brain tumors to problems affecting the skull and spine.

Nine-year-old Atticus has been receiving cancer treatment at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital since last year.

In that time, his care team has gotten to know him as a huge sports fan, a Minecraft lover and someone who brings plenty of personality to the 10th floor.

As teens grow, they start making more of their own choices about food, activity and their health. But when it comes to obesity, there may be more influencing those choices than we realize.

New research is giving us a closer look at what may be happening in the brain. In adolescents with severe obesity, researchers found differences in how areas involved in hunger and body weight communicate with those that play a role in reward and decision-making.

“Many people still believe that obesity is a choice, a weakness, a lack of willpower,” MUSC's Dr. Marc-Andre Cornier said. “But these adolescents aren’t choosing to have obesity. They’re not choosing to have this difference in their brain activity.”

These findings could help families and healthcare providers better understand what teens with obesity may be experiencing and how to support them.

Behind that big smile is one strong 3-year-old. 🩵

Millie Black has been receiving treatment for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital since her diagnosis in January.

With every appointment and hospital stay, her care team has learned more about her, from what makes her smile to the things she loves and how important it is for her to still be a kid.

For Millie, that can mean hugs, bubbles, laughs and little moments of fun while going through something no one her age should ever have to face.

As she continues her treatment journey, we’ll be right here cheering her on every step of the way!
