Keeping it 100% real with our youth! ✨

Today, we created a safe space for the youth of Wesley United Methodist Church to identify stress unique to each of them and exploring the power of our brains and nervous system.

“Look up at your goals, not down at your mistakes.” 💫  ~Wesley Youth Participant

Back to the Basics: Building Emotional Regulation in Preschoolers 🧩📚

At Safe Space Counseling, we know that big emotions, like anxiety, can sometimes lead to impulsive behaviors in little ones.

Sometimes, the most effective therapy is the simplest. That’s why we focus on the fundamentals!

By using age-appropriate tools,we help children identify feelings, practice self-control, and build essential coping skills.

📚 Books: To understand and normalize emotions.
🧩 Puzzles: To practice patience, focus, and problem-solving.
🎲 Board Games: To learn turn-taking, cooperation, and managing frustration in a fun way.

Start with breathing when a child shows the first signs of emotional dysregulation. From there, use art as a powerful tool for co-regulating, calming the mind, and transforming heavy feelings into something bright and beautiful. 🌈✨

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is give your hands something to hold so your mind can let go.

Emotional awareness using play dough is a powerful way to bridge the gap between what we feel inside and how we express it on the outside. When words feel too heavy or hard to find, shaping clay gives our emotions a tangible form.

🧡 Why Play Dough?
Sensory Grounding: The physical act of kneading, rolling, and squeezing clay helps lower cortisol levels and anchors us in the present moment.

Creative Expression: It allows our participants to externalize complex feelings—turning anxiety, stress, or grief into a physical object they can change, reshape, or simply sit with.

A Gentle Reminder: Just like the clay, our feelings are moldable. They change, they shift, and they don’t have to stay stuck in one shape forever.

Yesterday, we worked with some of our youngest clients (ages 4–6) on a critical milestone in early childhood development: giving abstract feelings a name and a shape.

🧠🌱For little minds navigating a high-stimulation world, big emotions like anger, frustration, or overwhelm can feel like a tangled knot. If they can’t express it, it often manifests as a tantrum or internal anxiety.

Sometimes the biggest feelings are the hardest to put into words. That’s where the power of creative expression comes in. 🎨🌱

In our pediatric sessions, something as simple as sensory playdough becomes a powerful canvas for emotional expression.

When children carve, trace, stamp out words like “PATIENCE” or “SLOW DOWN” into tactile clay, they aren’t just making art, they are physically shaping and interacting with their coping skills.

This sensory-grounding work helps little minds:
✨ Lower nervous system acceleration in moments of high anxiety.
✨ Externalize heavy internal feelings into a physical, manageable object.

By pairing somatic play with targeted emotional tools, we give young learners a safe framework to process, apply, and integrate coping strategies that stick long after the session ends.

Because when we give creativity a safe space, peace can truly take root.

Building strong roots for a bright future! 🌱

Our “How I Feel Today” Social & Emotional Learning session was all about creative expression and emotional awareness.

From sculpting our feelings with clay to navigating “Red, Yellow, and Green” choices with our traffic light art, these young learners are practicing crucial self-awareness and empathy skills. 🚦🎨❤️

Teaching kids how to pause, think, and express themselves early sets them up for a lifetime of positive emotional management. 🧠

What’s your favorite way to check in on your little one’s feelings today?

🌟 Safe Space Pediatrics Recognizes the Power of Connection 🌟

At Safe Space Pediatrics, we believe that connection is at the heart of every healthy child.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as:
🤝 Holding their hand
🗣️ Taking a moment to talk and really listen

These little acts matter because we all are innately seeking connection.

💚 Did you know? Regular, intentional connection with your child can help reduce anxiety, build trust, and support emotional well-being.

👉 Give it a try today. Sit with them, hold their hand, or ask, “How are you feeling?”

Your presence is powerful.
Your connection is healing.
