North Charleston Fire Department Responds to Fatal Residential Structure Fire on Sterrett Street

NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA (July 23, 2026) — The North Charleston Fire Department was dispatched by Charleston County Consolidate Dispatch at approximately 9:07 p.m. to the 5200 block of Sterrett Street in reference to a residential structure fire with reports of possible occupants trapped inside. Initial callers reported flames visible from a window of the residence.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a single-story residence. Firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while additional crews conducted primary search operations for occupants believed to be inside the home. Crews worked simultaneously to suppress the fire, conduct searches, and protect surrounding properties.

During the search, firefighters located three victims inside the residence. All three victims were removed from the structure, and life-saving efforts were initiated by North Charleston Fire Department personnel and Charleston County EMS. Despite those efforts, all three victims succumbed to their injuries.

The fire was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes. Crews remained on scene conducting overhaul operations, extinguishing remaining hot spots, and ensuring the fire had not extended beyond the structure. During overhaul and the subsequent fire investigation, firefighters
also located one deceased cat inside the residence.

The incident is currently under investigation by the North Charleston Fire Department Fire Investigations Unit, in coordination with the North Charleston Police Department, the Charleston County Coroner’s Office, and other assisting agencies. The identities of the victims, along with the official cause and manner of death, will be released by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office following notification of next of kin.
