The Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. We offer consultation, referral and emergency veterinary services for cats, dogs, birds, fish, reptiles, and other small animals such as

ferrets and guinea pigs. We are accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a distinction awarded to only 15% of animal hospitals.

This pigeon was found on June 20 in Mansfield, MA. The bird could not fly and has 2 leg bands - the right is red with the number 11 on it, and the left is blue and is blank. The local animal control officer has been notified.

Study goal: To determine if cats with chronic feline rhinosinutisus also have lower airway inflammation.

Inclusion: Adult cats older that six months of age presenting for nasal workup with plans for a CT/nasal biopsy,

Exclusion: Cats with clinically relevant heart disease (on medications), cats receiving antibiotics or steroids within the previous four weeks.

Incentives: The study will cover the cost of a thoracic CT, blind BAL, and respiratory PCR (estimated cost $1500).

Owner costs: Cost of CT of head and anesthesia (estimated cost of $4000-$4500).

In May, the Massachusetts Society for Histotechnology (MaSH) held its Annual Spring Symposium at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. The society spent the day learning, networking, and connecting with fellow professionals from across the New England region. The symposium featured a variety of lectures covering topics throughout the field of histology, including presentations from two of our own pathologists at the Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CVDL).

Dr. Emily Brinker presented on the diagnostic applications of special stains in kidney and liver pathology, highlighting their role in functional diagnostics. Dr. Gisela Martinez shared her work with the Great Ape Heart Project, providing attendees with insight into this unique and impactful initiative. Participants also had the opportunity to explore an art exhibit featuring specimens from our own anatomy lab, and histology artwork from artists all over the globe.

Another highlight of the event was the recognition of the Supervisor of Tufts' Diagnostic Histology Laboratory, Linda Wrijil, who received the Norma King Award as the 2026 MaSH Histotechnologist of the Year. The Norma King Award honors a histotechnologist who exemplifies outstanding mentorship, teamwork, and dedication within the workplace, recognizing individuals who make a lasting impact on both their colleagues and the profession. The team in CVDL is incredibly proud of her hard work and dedication to the profession.

I was especially excited to highlight the importance of veterinary histology, as our field often focuses primarily on human pathology, and many histotechnologists are unaware of the opportunities that exist within veterinary medicine. Cummings School was well represented by our faculty, house officers, and technicians at this year’s American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) conference in Seattle.

Small animal internal residents Dr. Caroline Bondi and Dr. Sonya Karchemskiy, and large animal internal medicine resident Dr. Ananya Mahalingam, V22, all won ACVIM resident research awards. Hannah Nelson, V28, received a 2026 MedVet Student Award supporting their travel to the forum.

Welcome Dr. Emma Gorenberg, new assistant professor of anesthesia and analgesia for small and large animals.

"My interests have continued to diversify as I've done different things with my career. At Tufts [Cummings School], there are so many strong avenues within the hospitals for students to investigate all different aspects of vet med—public health, the wildlife clinic, zoological medicine, small and large animals. That's my favorite thing about the field: there's so much diversity in what you can do."

Members of Cummings School's Office of Professional Education team recently traveled to NEADS World Class Service Dogs in Princeton, MA for a tour of their new veterinary clinic and early learning center for their canine residents and to volunteer their time to help with gardening upkeep for several areas on their campus.

The team, Mike Santasieri, Joseph Kelley, D.V.M. Simulation Laboratory Manager, Shannon Conley, Teaching Technician, Kara Witt, Professional Education Manager, Jill Franko-Burnell, Large Animal Simulation Laboratory Manager, Hope Becker, Assessment Coordinator, Sarah Lawson, Curriculum Administrator, and Karen Reagan, Senior Administrative Coordinator, met with NEADS resident veterinarian, Dr. Cathryn Cleveland, V13 and Robert, a 2-year-old service dog in training.
