Some hearts seem to have been born with their windows open—
touched by color, moved by beauty, awakened by the smallest glimmer.

Perhaps their tenderness was never something to quiet.
Perhaps it is simply the way light finds its way in.

Where the Sun Finds Her

The sun finds her
somewhere between water and sky—

where gold spills across the blue
and everything it touches
seems to remember how to glow.

She has always loved this hour.

When light lingers.

When water carries the heavens.

When little white wishes
loosen themselves to the wind
and wander wherever evening takes them.

Perhaps her heart is something like this.

A place where beauty enters
and becomes feeling.

Where feeling becomes wonder.

Where wonder becomes something
she cannot help but carry into the world.

She notices the glimmer.

The turning leaf.

The warmth that remains upon her skin
after the sun has slipped lower.

She lets these things matter.

And there is something exquisite in that—

to move through life
with a heart still willing to be moved.

The breeze catches her dress.

The water catches the light.

And she—

she catches a little of both.

Carrying within her
the softness of water,

the warmth of evening,

and all those tiny, luminous wishes
still brave enough

to take to the air.

Where the Water Leads

She followed the water north.

Through pine and fern,
over stone made smooth
by the patient passing of years.

Morning scattered itself across the stream,
turning the current to ribbons of light.

Above her, leaves twisted in the wind—
gold, amber, crimson—
whispering from branch to branch
as though the forest knew something
she had yet to remember.

So she followed.

There are places we search for
and places that seem to call us home
long before we know their name.

Perhaps this was such a place.

The mountains rose beyond the trees.
Cold, clear water traveled between them.
Sunlight warmed the ancient stone.

And for once,
nothing within her asked
what waited beyond the next ridge.

She rested.

Then—

warmth against her back.

Another breath.

Another heartbeat.

She leaned gently into it.

No words passed between them.

None were needed.

Around them, the leaves continued their golden turning.
The water carried pieces of sunlight downstream.
The mountains kept their quiet watch.

And something that had traveled
a very long way within her
became still.

Perhaps belonging is not a place we find.

Perhaps it is the rare and beautiful moment
when we no longer feel separate
from the life surrounding us—

when the earth beneath us,
the breath beside us,
and the heart within us

seem, for one quiet moment,

to be speaking
the same language.

Kissed by a Butterfly

The sun had already risen
by the time I found the window.

Morning had begun without me—
the sky carrying on,
the light already touching
whatever it could reach.

For a moment,
I asked nothing of the day.

I simply sat there
and looked up.

No searching for meaning.
No arranging what came next.

Only the quiet gratitude
of being here
to witness another morning.

And then came the butterfly.

Such a small arrival—
a flicker of wings
entering a moment
I had left unguarded.

Perhaps this is one of nature's
gentler teachings:

not everything beautiful
comes because we went looking for it.

Some things find us
when we loosen our hold on the day,
when we stop insisting
upon what the moment should become
and allow ourselves
to belong to what already is.

I did not need to capture it.

I only needed to notice
that for one brief moment,

life had come close enough
to kiss me.

Hazy Blue

I am a naturally anxious person.

There are days when I move easily through the world. I make the call. Walk through the door. Introduce myself. Say what needs to be said.

And there are other days when something as ordinary as a ringing telephone can feel like a threshold.

I have become quite skilled at finding another way.

Could I send a message instead? Write an email? Wait until tomorrow? Accomplish the same thing without having to encounter the thing that makes me uncomfortable?

For a long time, I considered this simply resourcefulness.

Sometimes it is.

But I am beginning to understand that adaptation and avoidance can wear remarkably similar clothes.

There is an interesting mechanism within anxiety: avoidance often works.

At least for a moment.

We avoid the conversation, decline the invitation, postpone the call—and almost immediately, the discomfort subsides. The nervous system receives relief.

And relief is persuasive.

It can quietly teach us that escaping the uncomfortable thing was what made us safe.

So we become more likely to escape it again.

This is where something seemingly protective can begin making our world smaller.

That doesn't mean every uncomfortable situation must be conquered or that there is only one correct way to communicate. Quite the opposite.

Human beings are wonderfully varied.

One person thinks aloud; another needs silence before answering. One prefers a conversation; another expresses herself more precisely in writing. Learning to recognize those differences is not weakness. It is social intelligence.

There is wisdom in having more than one way through.

The harder work is learning who is choosing the way.

Is it discernment?

Creativity?

Respect for another person's needs?

Or is fear making the decision before I have had the opportunity to make it myself?

I am learning to ask myself that question.

Not because I intend to eliminate anxiety from my life. I am no longer convinced that courage requires its absence.

Sometimes courage is considerably less dramatic.

Sometimes it is a phone resting on the table.

A number you have been meaning to call.

The familiar hesitation.

And a hand that reaches for it anyway.

Maybe growth is not always about becoming fearless.

Maybe it is about becoming increasingly unwilling to let fear make decisions on our behalf.

There will always be doors that feel heavier to one person than they do to another.

We rarely know which ones required someone else's courage to open.

And perhaps that is reason enough to move through the world with a little more grace—

for others,

and for ourselves.

There is an artist within each of us—

a quiet place where feeling becomes color,
where longing becomes language,
and where even the things we cannot name
may become something beautiful.

May we meet one another there—

not by what has broken us,
but by what is still waiting
to be created.

The Making Hour

There is a place one can go,
a place where the world becomes quiet enough.

Where evening lays its darkened hand upon the glass
and all that clamored for attention
begins to lose its name.

The room.

The hour.

The world beyond it.

Deeper.

There—

where thought gives way to reverie
and the last ribbons of light
lie trembling upon the water—

something stirs.

At first, scarcely more than a whisper.

A color glimpsed before it has been mixed.

A line impatient for the page.

A melody wandering the corridors of the mind,
searching for the hands that will set it free.

And then—

the quickening.

That beautiful unrest known only to those
who have felt something within them
begging to be made.

Now the canvas is no longer canvas.

The page is no longer paper.

The instrument waits like a held breath.

Paint grows wild beneath the brush.

Words gather at the threshold.

Light bends itself toward the lens.

Clay warms beneath the hand.

And imagination—

once formless,
once hidden—

begins to dance.

This is the hour when one would gladly spend
every last drop of color,

ruin the clean page,

stain the hands,

lose the night,

only to witness something that did not exist before
draw its first breath.

What strange and exquisite hunger is this—

to look upon an empty thing
and feel abundance?

To stand before silence
and hear what might be sung?

To enter darkness
and find oneself surrounded by color?

Perhaps this is the oldest language we possess.

Before the brush,
before the pen,
before the lens,
before the luminous instruments now gathering
at our fingertips—

there was the human longing

to take what stirred unseen within us

and give it form.

And so the tools will change.

Let them.

The artist will meet them
with the same ancient fire.

For creation has never belonged to the instrument.

It belongs to the hand that reaches.

The eye that notices.

The mind that wanders.

The heart that cannot leave a beautiful thing
unanswered.

And somewhere in the violet hour,

between what has been imagined
and what has yet to exist,

the artist reaches into the dark—

and comes away

with light upon her hands.

There are places that remind us how much life can hold.

I stood within walls built long before I arrived, in a place once shaped by prominent families, their ambitions, their gatherings, their ordinary mornings and extraordinary dreams.

And I found myself thinking about time.

How every generation has stood somewhere between what has already been and what might still become.

We inherit histories, circumstances, expectations, sometimes even limitations—but we are also given this remarkable human ability to imagine beyond what presently exists.

To build.

To learn.

To begin again.

Perhaps that is where a better life first takes form—not in some grand arrival, but quietly within us.

A thought becomes an intention.

An intention changes the direction of a step.

A step becomes a path.

And somewhere along the way, the life we once imagined begins becoming the life beneath our feet.

So on this Monday morning, I breathe a little deeper.

I move forward.

Not hurriedly. Not because I know exactly where every road will lead.

But because history reminds me that human beings have always dreamed beyond the circumstances in which they found themselves.

We have crossed oceans. Built homes. Created art. Raised families. Changed directions. Survived losses. Discovered things once thought impossible.

There is so much within us still capable of becoming.

And perhaps manifestation is not simply wishing for another life.

Perhaps it is allowing the dream to become direction—then giving that direction our breath, our movement, our work, our courage, and our time.

Breathe life into the dream.
Move your feet toward it.
Let Monday be another beginning.
