October is Contact Lens Safety Month 👀

Contact lenses can be safe and effective in helping people see more clearly. However, when used improperly, they can cause serious eye and vision problems, including corneal ulcers and potentially blinding infections. Prevent Blindness has declared October as Contact Lens Safety Month to help educate the public on the best ways to protect their eyes through proper care.

DID YOU KNOW?

Between 40-90 percent of contact lens wearers do not properly follow the care instructions for their contact lenses.

The single best way to avoid eye infections is to follow proper lens care guidelines as prescribed by your eye care professional. Prevent Blindness recommends the following for safe contact lens care:

- Before handling contact lenses, wash hands with soap and water, then rinse and dry them with a lint-free towel.
- Minimize contact with water, including removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub.
- Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in water (tap or sterile water).
- Wear and replace contact lenses according to the schedule prescribed by an eyecare professional.
- During cleaning, using fresh solution, rub your contact lenses with your fingers, then rinse the lenses with solution before soaking them – even if the solution you are using is a “no-rub” variety.
- Contact lens cases should always be cleaned with fresh solution – not water. Then leave the empty case open to air dry.

ROAD CLOSURE – STATE ROAD 114

After a two-week delay, the closure of State Road 114 at the railroad tracks will begin TOMORROW, September 9, and is expected to last up to six weeks.

The closure is necessary for water main replacement work underneath the railroad tracks and continuing westward.

🚗 LOCAL TRAFFIC:
Local traffic may use the Thorn Street railroad crossing as an alternate route.

🚛 SEMI-TRUCK TRAFFIC:
Semi-trucks should use North Market Street and State Road 13 when traveling east/west. Please do not use Thorn Street as a truck detour.

Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use caution in the area.

We know road closures can be inconvenient, and we appreciate everyone's patience as we complete this important infrastructure work.

September is Myopia Control Month 👀

Nearsightedness (myopia) is when close-up objects look clear but distant objects are blurry. For instance, you can read a map clearly but have trouble seeing well enough to drive a car.

Nearsightedness is a common eye focusing disorder. It has been on the rise for several decades. It is estimated that by 2050, nearly half the people in the world will have nearsightedness.

Some of the signs and symptoms of myopia include: eyestrain, headaches, squinting to see properly, and difficulty seeing objects far away, such as road signs or a blackboard at school.

A great first step to prevent or slow the progression of nearsightedness is to encourage your child to spend more time outdoors. Balancing indoor time with outdoor time is beneficial for a child’s health and well-being. Outdoor time is protective against nearsightedness and a good prescription for eye health.

Follow along all month long as we share helpful tips on how to manage Myopia!
