Iron: Why This Essential Mineral Matters for Health
Iron is one of the most important minerals the human body needs to function properly. Every cell in the body depends on iron in some way, making it essential for oxygen transport, energy production, brain development, muscle function, and a healthy immune system. While iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, having too much iron can also be harmful. The primary role of iron is to help produce hemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to every tissue in the body. Heme iron comes from animal foods and is absorbed more efficiently by the body. Good sources include: Lean beef, Liver, Chicken, Turkey, Fish, and Shellfish
Non-Heme Iron (Plant-Based)
Plant foods provide non-heme iron, which is healthy but absorbed less efficiently. Excellent sources include: Lentils, Beans, Tofu, Spinach, Pumpkin seeds, and Iron-fortified cereals.
Eating foods rich in vitamin C—such as oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli—alongside plant-based iron sources can significantly improve iron absorption.

Recommended daily iron intake varies according to age, s*x, and life stage.
Adult men: 8 mg per day
Women (19–50 years): 18 mg per day
Pregnant women: 27 mg per day
Women over 50 years: 8 mg per day
