Fermented foods and gut health

Did you know that fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh can support gut health by providing beneficial bacteria (probiotics) or compounds that promote a healthy gut environment.

Regular consumption may help improve digestion, support the balance of the gut microbiome, and contribute to immune function. Not all fermented foods contain live probiotics, especially if they are pasteurized after fermentation. For the greatest benefit, choose products with live, active cultures and include a variety of fiber-rich foods, which feed beneficial gut bacteria.

Hi to all of you following us on Facebook!

I have some difficult news to share with all of you today.

After three and a half wonderful years at Advanced Chiropractic of Mankato, my time is here is coming to an end. I have truly enjoyed being here, but my life and family's path has taken us farther away from Mankato at this time.

It has been an honor to help serve the Mankato community and the surrounding areas. I want to thank my patients for trusting me with your care throughout your wellness journeys, and I’d like to thank my colleagues who helped me grow and have supported me during my time here.

My last day in the clinic will be August 28th. I will miss everyone very much and will always remember my time here! It will be very difficult to say goodbye but I’m so very thankful for everyone I have met on this rewarding journey.

Advanced Chiropractic of Mankato has had the pleasure of sharing a space with Kay Miller since October 1st, 2018. At the time, she told us that she'd be here for three years. A few months short of eight years later and Kay has served her last clients at our location!

We will miss having her around the clinic! We have no idea who will keep up with the flowers outside of our front doors, a task she has masterfully managed with her green thumb.

While Kay isn't retiring just yet, we want to thank her for being a part of our clinic for these last years and for the high quality care she has provided to so many of our patients and to her own!

Congrats on slowing down, Kay! You've earned it!

Are artificial sweeteners the answer?

Artificial sweeteners may affect gut health by altering the balance and activity of gut bacteria, though effects vary by sweetener and by person.

Some studies suggest sweeteners such as saccharin and sucralose can change the gut microbiome and may influence glucose metabolism in certain individuals. Others, including aspartame, appear to have smaller or less consistent effects.

Current evidence is mixed, and moderate consumption within established safety limits is generally considered safe. More long-term human research is needed to determine how different artificial sweeteners affect gut health over time.

Please consider moderation when using or eating foods which contain these chemical sweeteners!

Cervical radiculopathy causes neck, shoulder, and arm pain due to compression of nerve roots and irritation of the paraspinal and scalene muscles located in your neck. It can show up as pain, numbness, and/or weakness in the arm and the location depends on which nerve root is being affected.

Acupuncture can help by addressing the trigger points in the muscles surrounding the neck, chest, and arms. Treatment can help those muscles relax which in turn will reduce compression that is bothering the nerve. It can also improve local circulation in that affected area as well.

Acupuncture can work great alongside chiropractic care, massage, or physical therapy for these symptoms.

Iron: Why This Essential Mineral Matters for Health

Iron is one of the most important minerals the human body needs to function properly. Every cell in the body depends on iron in some way, making it essential for oxygen transport, energy production, brain development, muscle function, and a healthy immune system. While iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, having too much iron can also be harmful. Understanding the role of iron can help people make informed decisions about their diet and overall health.

The primary role of iron is to help produce hemoglobin, the protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to every tissue in the body. Without enough iron, the body cannot produce sufficient healthy red blood cells, reducing the amount of oxygen delivered to organs and muscles.

Iron also contributes to several other vital functions such as energy production, brain function/neurological development, immune health, and muscle performance.
Understanding Iron Deficiency and Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Common symptoms of iron deficiency include: Persistent fatigue, Weakness, Pale skin, Shortness of breath, Dizziness, Headaches, Cold hands and feet, Brittle nails, and Cravings for non-food items such as ice or clay (a condition known as pica)

Healthcare providers typically diagnose iron deficiency and anemia through blood tests while treatment focuses on correcting the underlying cause, improving dietary iron intake, and, when appropriate, taking iron supplements under medical supervision.

Iron is available in two forms, heme iron and non-heme iron.
Heme Iron (More Easily Absorbed). Strong Dietary Sources of Iron include:

Heme iron comes from animal foods and is absorbed more efficiently by the body. Good sources include: Lean beef, Liver, Chicken, Turkey, Fish, and Shellfish
Non-Heme Iron (Plant-Based)

Plant foods provide non-heme iron, which is healthy but absorbed less efficiently. Excellent sources include: Lentils, Beans, Tofu, Spinach, Pumpkin seeds, and Iron-fortified cereals.

Eating foods rich in vitamin C—such as oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, tomatoes, and broccoli—alongside plant-based iron sources can significantly improve iron absorption.
Daily Iron Requirements

Recommended daily iron intake varies according to age, s*x, and life stage.

Adult men: 8 mg per day

Women (19–50 years): 18 mg per day

Pregnant women: 27 mg per day

Women over 50 years: 8 mg per day

Knee pain is a common issue and there are some very common treatment options including injection and surgery, but if you've been considering alternative or natural care options, Acupuncture may be helpful for you.

Common causes of knee pain include muscle pain, osteoarthritis, running injuries, ligament tears, and meniscus tears. There is a great pattern of acupuncture points that can give your knee relief from pain and swelling. It can improve local circulation, triggers the release of natural pain killers and endorphins, and reduces inflammation. There have been many studies to show that acupuncture will give patients relief and improve mobility.

Give us a call to see if acupuncture is a good fit for you to help reduce your knee pain!

Our lowest paying provider with the exception of medical assistance.

When you hear people say that clinics and hospitals are struggling, they are. They may use interesting terms like payor mix to explain it.

Companies like Blue Cross and Blue Shield are priced out of the market by Medica and United Health who have low balled group plans and slashed payment on services across the board.

Is health care perfect? Are systems, clinics, and providers? Nope! But this race to the bottom for record profits is behind many of the bad experiences that patients are dealing with!

Do you have chronic lower back pain?

Chronic (lasts more than 3 months) lower back pain is a common complaint that we see and treat here at Advanced Chiropractic.

Most people experience relief with chiropractic care, but if their pain is taking a long time or healing has hit a plateau, acupuncture could be a great treatment option to help advance recovery.

Acupuncture helps reduce pain signals by blocking nerve pathways, relaxes muscles that spasm, improves blood flow to the area which helps speed up tissue repair, and it supports energy balance. It is a great alternative for patients looking to reduce their intake of NSAIDs or opioids.

Patients have seen improvement on a decrease of pain and improved ranges of motion with acupuncture.
