At the birth center, midwives, mental health professionals, family educators and a
community of other professionals provide women and families with prenatal, birth, and postpartum care; childbirth education; breastfeeding help and gynecological services. All women and their newborn babies deserve the best, and we created a beautiful, personalized, state-of-the-art facility specifically designed to

meet their needs. The Birth Center is intended be inclusive of all midwives in our community and will open its doors to populations who may traditionally feel unwelcome in standard healthcare facilities, including GLBT individuals, the working poor, recent immigrants and adolescents.

This is typically done in the hospital before discharge as a routine screening, but since we had a home birth, I reached out to .birth to have it done there.
The newborn hearing test is a quick screening that checks your baby’s ears and how their brain responds to sound & it’s recommended for every newborn.
It was also nice to visit Magnolia Birth House and see the community centered care they offer.
If any home birth moms need to complete a newborn hearing screen for their baby (should be done by 1 month), reach out to Magnolia!

There are many reasons why a transfer from the birth center to the hospital could be necessary, and most of them are not emergencies. In fact, only 1% of transfers are emergencies.⁠

But sometimes plans change, and the hospital becomes the safest place to give birth. That’s why we offer “Preparing for Hospital Birth.” In this online class, we discuss:⁠

Did you know that we have toys available at the birth center? If you bring your baby or toddler with you for prenatal appointments, they can play with these toys while you fill out paperwork, talk with the staff, and visit with the midwife.⁠

It’s Black Breastfeeding Week! 🎉 Going on today through August 31, this annual event is in its 14th year of celebrating breastfeeding.

For 2025, the theme is “Boots on the Ground: Rooted in Breastfeeding Success, Grounded in Community.” It’s a call to highlight our history of community support and the role of community-centered organizations in making breast/body feeding work for Black families.

At Magnolia, our team is humbled and honored to support you on your lactation journey. We are dedicated to helping Black families while breastfeeding and guiding you toward the resources you need to have a successful lactation journey. 🤱🏾

One of the things we check during the newborn exam is body temperature. 🌡️⁠

Immediately after birth, babies often have a difficult time regulating their own temperature. Skin-to-skin contact with Mom, Dad, or another loved one can help, and we support and encourage those cuddles during your time at the birth center. 💚⁠

If you are transferring care late in your pregnancy, please attempt to request your current pregnancy’s medical records prior to your consultation with us. This allows us to see your labwork, pregnancy history, and previous prenatal visits so that we can better advise you during your consultation as to whether transferring into our care is a good option for you.⁠⁠⁠⁠

Newborn hearing screening is a really important assessment that we offer at Magnolia.⁠
⁠
Two out of 1,000 babies born in the United States have some degree of hearing loss, a statistic that makes it one of the most common health conditions at birth.⁠
⁠
In Florida, the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program encourages early diagnosis of hearing loss because it provides the best opportunity for early intervention. Diagnosis is usually unexpected, and more than 90 percent of babies born with hearing loss are born to hearing parents.⁠
⁠
The newborn hearing screening checks for hearing loss, including tonal deficiencies. It involves ear cups being gently placed onto the baby’s ears. The device plays soft sounds, and sensors measure the newborn’s response.⁠
⁠
We offer this service at Magnolia, and it’s available to all babies born at our birth center as well as any home birth babies in the area.⁠ If a newborn does not pass their initial hearing screening, we will encourage rescreening and diagnostic testing, if needed. In that case, our team can help you with a referral to an audiologist, physician, or other provider.⁠

One of the things our clients tell us they like about birth center care is going home soon after giving birth. For most families, as long as you and your baby are healthy and doing well, you’re in your bed or on your couch about four hours later.

If there’s a complication, some birthing parents or babies need a little more time at the birth center. But the majority of folks are ready to be discharged and return to their own environment.

If you have a question or concern after leaving the birth center, our midwives are always available by phone. And we see within the next day or two for your first postpartum appointment!
