Early signs and symptoms are many times overlooked by patients and family physicians as "routine" or "usual" especially in diabetic or pre-diabetic patients. These symptoms can be "warm spots" or localized swelling on parts of the foot which may indicate pressure points where ulcers may develop. Some patients may complain of exercise cramping in calf regions and feet that indicate circulatory compromise. Also, there may be signs of structural changes in the feet which indicate an advancement of joint instability that leads to arthritis. All these can be addressed early on to prevent or make less likely diabetic foot complications. Inspection of your feet daily and routine diabetic care/evaluation by a podiatric physician is critical.

A bunion is a misalignment of the big toe joint that can affect the function of the foot when walking. Left untreated, it can further develop into other orthopedic issues that can create worsening pain, advanced arthritis of the big toe joint and surrounding joints, and altered gait which can affect other body joints. Treatment options include both conservative and surgical and should be discussed with your podiatrist.
