One burial option available to our families is green burial. There are specific cemeteries that allow green burials for those who want them. Natural/Green burial grounds, cemeteries, and preserves all seek to bury without impediment. That means no embalming, no liners or vaults, and using biodegradable containers, whether caskets, shrouds or nothing at all. Many people worry about what to say at a funeral — and that’s completely understandable.

In moments of grief, there are rarely “perfect” words. What matters most is showing kindness, compassion, and support.

Simple phrases often mean the most:
“I’m so sorry for your loss.”
“They were deeply loved.”
“I’m thinking of you and your family.”
“I’m here if you need anything.”
Sharing a favorite memory can also bring comfort.

Sometimes, what we avoid saying is just as important. While usually well-intentioned, phrases like:
“Everything happens for a reason.”
“They’re in a better place.”
“At least they lived a long life.”
“I know exactly how you feel.”

can unintentionally minimize someone’s grief.

You don’t need to have all the answers. A heartfelt presence, a listening ear, and sincere words are often what families remember most during difficult times.
