I catch myself talking to babies and cats in this silly sing-song voice, "who's the sweetest girl in the whole world" voice. For a while I felt kind of silly doing it.
Then I read that it actually has a name (Motherese, or parentese) and there's real research behind why we do it.
Babies can't calm themselves down yet. They borrow that from us. A slow, warm voice does something a flat, normal-adult voice doesn't, it helps steady their heart rate and stress response. It's basically how they learn what safe feels like.
It's also connection. Eye contact, that tone, it all adds up to the same message, said a hundred times a day: I'm here, I see you.
So if you're doing the silly voice too, you're not silly. Keep doing it.
(This is exactly the kind of thing we explore in my Mother Intensive. If you want to know more, send me a DM or check the link in bio.)
Anyone else find themselves talking like this without even meaning to?
