Back-to-school mental health tips for parents

✏️Start routines gradually. Adjust bedtime, wake-up time, meals, and screen habits before school begins rather than changing everything overnight.

✏️Talk about feelings—not just supplies and schedules. Ask, “How are you feeling about going back?” and listen without immediately trying to fix the problem.

✏️Normalize nervousness. Let your child know that feeling excited, worried, or overwhelmed about a new school year is common.

✏️Avoid putting pressure on performance. Emphasize effort, learning, friendships, and well-being—not just grades.

✏️Help them break worries into manageable steps. If a child is anxious about school, identify one specific concern and work together on what might make it easier.

✏️Protect sleep. Consistent sleep is especially important for mood, concentration, and emotional regulation.

✏️Create a predictable after-school routine. Kids may need time to decompress, eat, move around, or have quiet time before homework.

✏️Keep communication open. Regular, low-pressure conversations often work better than waiting for a major problem.

✏️Watch for changes. Ongoing withdrawal, irritability, sleep or appetite changes, frequent physical complaints, declining functioning, or persistent school avoidance can be signs that a child needs additional support.

✏️Know when to reach out. A school counselor, pediatrician, or mental-health professional can help if emotional difficulties persist or interfere with daily life.

✏️Model healthy coping. Let children see you take breaks, manage stress, ask for help, and talk openly about emotions.

Caring for a child who needs extra support can be rewarding — and exhausting. Research shows caregivers face higher, more persistent rates of depression than other parents.

Connecting with others who get it can make a real difference. That’s why we offer free peer support groups on the last Monday of the month.

Help build a lifeline between parents with your gift during Mental Health Awareness Month: connectingforkids.org/MHAM

ID: An image announcing caregiver mental health with a focus on depression. The graphic features a woman looking downward with a subdued expression against a soft neutral background. Large text reads “Caregiver mental health” and “depression.” A highlighted callout states, “Many parent caregivers experience depression at 2–3 times the rate of other parents.” The Connecting for Kids logo appears on the left, and the website connectingforkids.org/MHAM is displayed at the bottom.
