🏈Collaborative Insight Series – Chapter 3 🏈

Join us for an engaging discussion on Sports Concussions: Return to Play and learn how a collaborative approach can help athletes recover safely and effectively.

Concussions can impact much more than just physical performance—they can affect vision, balance, reaction time, cognition, and overall quality of life. Our team will discuss the important role that vision, sensory processing, and interdisciplinary care play in helping athletes return to the activities they love.

Does Your Child W-Sit?

🧩 W-sitting is when a child sits on the floor with their knees bent and feet positioned outside their hips, forming a “W” shape.

While it may seem harmless, frequent W-sitting can sometimes be a sign of underlying developmental challenges, including:

• Retained primitive reflexes (especially the STNR – Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex)
• Core weakness
• Poor balance and postural control
• Difficulty crossing midline
• Delays in motor coordination

Many children W-sit because it provides a wider base of support and requires less core strength to stay upright.

The good news? These underlying challenges can often be addressed through targeted developmental activities and reflex integration.

If you notice your child W-sitting often, it may be worth taking a closer look at their overall motor and visual development.

Reflex Spotlight: The Moro Reflex

The Moro Reflex is often called the “startle reflex.” It helps newborns respond to sudden changes in their environment, but it should naturally integrate during infancy.

When the Moro Reflex is retained, children may:

• Be overly sensitive to noise, light, or touch
• Become easily overwhelmed in busy environments
• Struggle with emotional regulation
• Have difficulty concentrating and staying focused
• Experience anxiety or a constant “fight-or-flight” response

💡 Sound familiar? The good news is that retained primitive reflexes can be addressed through targeted activities designed to help the nervous system integrate these early reflex patterns.

At The Vision Development Team, we don’t just identify retained reflexes—we help children integrate them through our Sensory-Focused Foundations program, supporting better regulation, attention, learning, and overall development.

Wondering if a retained Moro Reflex could be affecting your child? Reach out today! Call or text us or visit our website for more information!
