John Trait, 84, of North Syracuse, passed away at home on the evening of Friday, September 4, 2026, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born the third of eleven children in Kilkenny, Ireland. He moved to Syracuse, NY, at 19. There he met the love of his life, Mary Margaret Dowling, at the Hibernian Hall. They married at St. Patrick’s Church on Tipperary Hill in 1964. They settled in North Syracuse together in 1968, where they raised their five children. They were an amazing example of unconditional love. Strong in his faith, John was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church for 58 years.

John was a hardworking man employed as a steamfitter (Local 81) for 38 years, retiring from Burns Brothers. He was a skilled golfer nicknamed by his grandchildren, along with his best friend Michael Cregan, as the “Wily Veterans” when they played a round together. He was a voracious reader and an excellent dancer. He was happiest listening to Irish music, whirling Mary Margaret on the dance floor, or playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended countless school and sporting events in support of them.

John was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Johanna Trait; his brothers, Thomas, Patsy, Martin, Michael, and James; and sisters, Mary, Margaret, and Theresa.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Margaret (Dowling) Trait; his children, Theresa (Tim) Haven, Sally (Ron) Meyers, Patrick (Ann)...

Karin Joan DeRegis, 82, a beloved sister, aunt, and great-aunt, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her immediate family. Born in Syracuse, Karin was a lifelong resident of the area and retired from Lockheed-Martin in 1999.

Karin will be remembered most for her incredibly kind, caring, and generous heart. She spent much of her retirement years selflessly devoting her time, energy, and love to helping and caring for her family members, always placing the needs of others before her own. Her warmth and unshakeable support were a cornerstone for those she loved. Outside of her family, Karin was an avid and passionate reader who loved diving into books, newspapers, and online articles.

Karin was preceded in death by her parents, John M. (2006) and Joan (2005); her brothers, Robert (2002), Ronald (1979), John J. (2007), and Mark (2019); and her niece, Katherine (2000).

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Carol P.; her sister and brother-in-law, Janis and Craig Woodard; her sisters-in-law, Jean DeRegis and Annie DeRegis; as well as her cherished nieces and nephews, Brian, Robert J., Carol J., Richard A., Zion, Yasha, Mackenzie, and Kelsey.

A private service for immediate family will be held in her honor.

William Hamm of Jamesville, NY passed away on September 3, 2026 during his 89th trip around the sun.

Bill was born in Newton, NJ, on November 10, 1937, just ten minutes before his identical twin brother, Robert Boyden Hamm. His parents were George William Hamm and Martha Flomerfelt Hamm of Gladstone, NJ. Bill and Bob were grandsons of the late William Boyden Flomerfelt of Far Hills, NJ.

Bill and his family lived in Gladstone, NJ, and he was baptised in Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church there in 1938. In 1940, the family moved to Culver Lake, NJ, to live in the family home built by his grandfather. Bill grew up there and attended nearby schools. He graduated from Newton High School (Newton, NJ) in 1955 and Lafayette College (Easton, PA) in 1960 with a BS in Civil Engineering.

Bill’s career started in California with the US Forest Service, working in the Stanislaus National Forest as a forest engineer. In 1961, he moved back east and accepted a position as a civil engineer with New York State in Poughkeepsie with the Department of Transportation (then the Department of Public Works). Bill obtained his Professional Engineering license in 1967.

Bill enlisted in the US Army Reserves and served 6 years from 1963 to 1969. He took basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and trained at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, as a construction equipment operator. He was attached to Company C 854th Engineering Battalion, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Traci L. Ge**er, 48, of Baldwinsville, passed away August 27, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was born in Syracuse, and received her Masters Degree in Emergency Medicine at Syracuse University. Traci previously worked for the NYS Helicopter Paramedics as a Flight Medic and for Delta Airlines. She currently worked for Lockheed Martin as an Assembly Technician. Traci enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, and volunteering at local pet shelters, and was known to be very artistic. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her niece’s, Lucy and Ellie and nephew, George.

She was predeceased by her mother, Linda (Downs) Kimball.

Traci is survived by her father, Peter K. Kimball; two brothers, Adam (Lucia) Kimball and Cory (Jessica) Kimball; her beloved dog Bear; her close friend, Dave Barski; her aunt, Renee Badgett and many other aunts, uncles and friends.

Barbara Ann Sherman (Cahill), 84, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away Thursday, September 3, after a brief illness.

Originally from East Syracuse, Barbara was the daughter of the late John and Clori Cahill. She was a graduate of Convent School, where she received her diploma in 1960, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Oswego College of Education in 1964, where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Chi sorority. Barbara’s brother, Jack, introduced her to the love of her life and future husband, Bob, who also graduated from Oswego College. They married in 1964.

Barbara was a dedicated primary education teacher who devoted her career to helping generations of young students learn and grow. During her 25-year career, she taught in Marcellus and Camillus, but primarily at Donlin Drive Elementary School in Liverpool. She proudly advised on the design of Willowfield Elementary School during its construction in the late 1980s. Barbara taught all grade levels from kindergarten through sixth grade and frequently expressed how much she learned alongside her sixth-grade students. Her favorite students were the little ones, however, and she often said, “You learn everything you need to know in kindergarten.” Through her rewarding career, she developed many lifelong friendships. Her fun-loving spirit was shared with all.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and generosity....

Paul M. Leo, beloved husband, father, and uncle, of Syracuse, NY, passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2026, at the age of 61. Paul was born in Syracuse on November 15, 1964, and graduated from Nottingham High School. He earned a Bachelor's of Science from LeMoyne College and a Master's of Teaching from SUNY Cortland. He was a devoted educator through BOCES. His greatest joys were his wife and children, cheering for Syracuse University's sports teams, vacationing in Cape Cod, and homemade, family Italian cooking, especially the family's traditional Christmas Eve feast.

His wife of 20 years, Rebecca; his children, Mia, Genevieve, and Avigayil; his brother Steven and his wife Leslie; his sister Marlene; his sister-in-law Mary Leo; and his nephews and nieces loved him for his generosity, kindness, and humor.

His parents, John J. Leo and Mary Antoinette (Solazzo) Leo, and brothers John, Jr. and Mark predeceased him.

June Ann (West) Baycura, 90, of Liverpool, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2026 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Little Falls, NY to the late Chauncey J. and Margaret (Foley) West.

June graduated from Herkimer High School in 1954 and SUNY Geneseo in 1958. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech/Elementary Education. She also was a member of the Alpha Delta Epsilon Sorority and involved in music and drama while attending college.

June married Donald Baycura on 8/27/1960. She was employed by the Elmira and Union-Endicott School Districts as a speech therapist.

June enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved music, playing guitar and piano with her children. June also enjoyed the outdoors, exploring the Adirondacks and fishing on Oneida Lake and in many streams with her husband; sharing their strong feelings for preservation of the environment.

June was active in her parish, Christ the King Roman Catholic Church and also with the Liverpool High School Marching Band Boosters. June also served her community with pride as a member of the Bayberry Community Association, acting as its President, and for the past 25 years, as its Historian. She was instrumental in working with the surrounding businesses and local leaders in preserving the character of the community and its open spaces. Margaret “Peg” Schill passed away August 29, 2026 after a short illness.

Peg was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but grew up in Liverpool. She was married in November 1957 to Floyd Schill. Peg was in the Naval reserves from 1955 to 1959 with an honorable discharge. She raised four boys on her own in a small apartment on North Geddes Street on the Westside of Syracuse. Once the boys were grown, she moved into her first house in Liverpool where she frequented the library and local concerts with her friend Sylvia. Her career was working in the Bursar office at Onondaga Community College for more than 30 years. Once retired, Peg volunteered at the local nursing home and worked part time operating the carousel at Carousel (Destiny) Mall.

Peg was always very caring and not wanting to burden anyone with her issues as she lived independently for about 5 decades. She made crafts with the “Happy Hens” and was constantly sending out birthday, get well and anniversary cards. After retirement, she enjoyed travel and went to Alaska, Germany, Japan as well as many US locations on her own (San Diego, Las Vegas, Arizona). But her love was the beach and frequented Topsail Island in North Carolina where her parents vacationed and owned a beach house. Watching the weather channel for potential hurricanes that could hit Topsail became a passion. She spent 40 years maintaining, renting and visiting Beach Haven on the island.
