John Trait, 84, of North Syracuse, passed away at home on the evening of Friday, September 4, 2026, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He was born the third of eleven children in Kilkenny, Ireland. He moved to Syracuse, NY, at 19. There he met the love of his life, Mary Margaret Dowling, at the Hibernian Hall. They married at St. Patrick’s Church on Tipperary Hill in 1964. They settled in North Syracuse together in 1968, where they raised their five children. They were an amazing example of unconditional love. Strong in his faith, John was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church for 58 years.
John was a hardworking man employed as a steamfitter (Local 81) for 38 years, retiring from Burns Brothers. He was a skilled golfer nicknamed by his grandchildren, along with his best friend Michael Cregan, as the “Wily Veterans” when they played a round together. He was a voracious reader and an excellent dancer. He was happiest listening to Irish music, whirling Mary Margaret on the dance floor, or playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He attended countless school and sporting events in support of them.
John was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Johanna Trait; his brothers, Thomas, Patsy, Martin, Michael, and James; and sisters, Mary, Margaret, and Theresa.
