I used to think taking care of myself meant trying harder.
Working harder. Eating cleaner. Finding the perfect diet. Being more disciplined.
I grew up on a dairy farm, so pushing through came naturally. We worked before sunrise, after dark, through hay season, planting, harvesting, cattle, chores… whatever needed done.
I learned an incredible work ethic.
I also learned to believe that if something wasn’t working, the answer was probably: work harder.
That followed me into my health.
In my early 20s, I wanted more energy, strength, mental clarity, and a better relationship with food.
So I tried EVERYTHING 😂
Paleo. Keto. Vegan. Vegetarian. Whole30. Fasting. Cleanses. Detoxes. Supplements.
For years I bounced between:
“This is it!!!”
and…
“Why am I tired, hungry and starting over AGAIN?”
Eventually I admitted I needed help.
I hired a nutrition coach and started learning something completely different:
Consistency. Enough food. Balanced nutrition. Protein. Strength training. Course correcting instead of quitting. Working WITH my real life instead of fighting it.
Slowly, things changed.
I got stronger.
My energy became more consistent.
My relationship with food and exercise changed.
And something even bigger happened:
I started trusting myself again.
When I wrote the original version of this post over 4 years ago, I had just become a mom.
Today I understand this even deeper.
Self-care isn’t doing everything perfectly.
It’s learning how to nourish yourself inside a REAL life.
Kids. Work. Stress. Relationships. Changing seasons. Changing bodies.
That’s why my work now goes beyond nutrition.
We talk about movement, emotional eating, stress, habits, mindset, boundaries, energy, intuition and self-worth.
Because health isn’t just:
“I lost weight.”
It’s:
“I feel strong.”
“I have energy for my life.”
“I trust myself.”
“I recognize myself again.”
THAT feels like health to me now. 🤎
What would feeling genuinely well again allow you to do in your life?
