Legs Up the Wall with hip elevation (a supported variation of Viparita Karani) is one of the most well-researched restorative yoga postures, and several of the commonly claimed benefits are supported by physiology, although some claims are stronger than others. Elevating the legs above heart level helps venous blood and lymphatic fluid return from the lower limbs toward the torso through gravity, which can temporarily reduce mild swelling, feelings of heaviness, and fluid pooling in the feet and ankles, especially after long periods of sitting or standing.

The position also reduces the workload on leg veins and may provide relief for people who experience mild lower-extremity edema. The pose is considered deeply relaxing because it encourages parasympathetic ("rest-and-digest") nervous system activity, often resulting in a slower heart rate, reduced feelings of stress, improved relaxation, and better sleep quality when practiced before bedtime.

When the hips are supported on a bolster or cushion, the lumbar spine and pelvis are gently unloaded, which can decrease muscular tension in the lower back, hip flexors, and hamstrings and create a comfortable stretching effect without significant effort.

Have you ever reacted to something so strongly that even you wondered, "Why did that affect me so much?"

Psychology suggests that when old emotional wounds are triggered, our reactions can sometimes feel much bigger than the current situation. A small criticism may feel devastating. A delayed text message may create intense anxiety. A disagreement may feel like rejection. In these moments, it can seem as though part of us is responding from a much earlier chapter of life rather than from the present moment.

This happens because emotional memories are not stored the same way as ordinary memories. Experiences that caused significant fear, shame, abandonment, or hurt can leave a lasting imprint on the nervous system. When something in the present resembles those past experiences, the brain may react as if the old threat is happening again, even when the circumstances are very different.

That does not mean people literally become the age they were when the wound was created. Rather, they may temporarily reconnect with the emotions, fears, and coping patterns that developed during that period of their life. Understanding this can be a powerful step toward self-awareness and healing.

The goal is not to judge yourself for emotional reactions. It is to become curious about them. Asking, "What is this feeling trying to protect me from?" often reveals far more than asking, "What's wrong with me?"
