The Garden A Center for Grieving Children and Teens

The Garden A Center for Grieving Children and Teens The Garden — A Center for Grieving Children and Teens is a program of Cooley Dickinson VNA & Hospice. We support bereaved young people ages 5-18 years.

We support young people (5-18 years), and their families when someone close to them has died regardless of how, when or where the person died. Families come on Sunday afternoons to meet in small groups with others there age. While the young people engage in activities, projects and games their adult caregivers have the opportunity to share about the challenges of raising a grieving young person, while grieving themselves. Sign up in advance is required. No cost to participate.

As children and teens return to school, those who are grieving a death often face unique emotional challenges. On behalf of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement (NCSCB) , we’re grateful to share their new Social Media Toolkit and Guidance Document - Back to School: Remember That Transitions Can Be Tough for Grieving Students.

These resources help schools, educators, and caregivers recognize what grieving students may be carrying with them into the classroom — and offer practical ways to support them with compassion and understanding.

The toolkits include:
-Background on why school transitions can be especially difficult for grieving students
-Ready‑to‑use graphics and captions (including editable Canva links)
-Sample messaging for educators, administrators, and student support staff
-Downloadable guidance documents and social media assets

At The Garden, we know how important it is for grieving children and teens to feel seen, supported, and understood — at home, in our groups, and in their classrooms. We’re grateful for partners like NCSCB who help strengthen that circle of care.

At The Garden, children and teens explore their feelings through art, play, storytelling, and movement.

These creative outlets help young people express what words sometimes can’t, giving them safe, supportive ways to understand their grief and connect with others who “get it.”

The 4th of July can be a joyful time of connection, celebration, and tradition, but for children and teens who are grieving, it can also bring reminders of someone deeply missed.

At The Garden, we honor all the feelings that come with days like today. It’s okay if this holiday feels different. It’s okay to celebrate, to remember, or to simply take the day as it comes.

We are here to provide a safe, supportive space where young people can share their stories, express their emotions, and feel less alone.

Wishing our community a gentle day filled with moments of comfort, connection, and care. ❤️🤍💙

At the Garden, our mission is to support young people and their families as they navigate the death of someone close. But we know that caregivers and other adults in a child’s life often need their own space for healing, too.

If you or an adult in your family is seeking grief support, Cooley Dickinson VNA & Hospice offers a variety of free adult bereavement programs, including:

-Walking groups for connection and gentle movement

-Expressive arts sessions focused on healing through creativity

-Virtual book discussions on grief and loss

-Weekly in‑person grief support groups

These programs provide spaces for adults to share, learn, and find community along their grief journey.
