Shoulder pain when lifting your arm? Wondering if it’s a rotator cuff tear?
These 3 simple shoulder tests can help screen for a possible rotator cuff injury by checking the three main rotator cuff muscles. Compare your painful shoulder to the opposite side. If one side is significantly weaker, it may indicate a rotator cuff injury that should be evaluated.
Keep in mind that pain alone doesn’t necessarily mean you have a rotator cuff tear. Many people with shoulder pain have tendon irritation, bursitis, or shoulder impingement. However, significant weakness compared to the opposite shoulder is a reason to have your shoulder assessed by a healthcare professional.
If you have shoulder pain, pain reaching overhead, pain lifting weights, pain sleeping on your shoulder, or weakness when raising your arm, these tests are a simple place to start.
