Researchers have developed an experimental pacemaker that works without wires or surgery by using ultrasound instead of electrical leads. The wearable device, about the size of a postage stamp, sits on the chest and sends focused sound waves through the body to help control the heartbeat. In laboratory studies using engineered human heart cells and tests in rats, the technology restored normal heart rhythms without implanting any hardware inside the heart.
The system works through a technique called sonogenetics, which makes heart cells respond to ultrasound. Researchers first modify specific heart cells so they become sensitive to sound waves. When the wearable patch sends ultrasound pulses, special channels in those cells open and allow calcium to flow inside. Calcium is the signal that tells heart muscle cells to contract, letting the researchers trigger each heartbeat without electrodes touching the heart.
If developed further, this approach could reduce the need for surgeries, implanted wires, and battery replacements required by conventional pacemakers. The same wearable patch may eventually monitor the heart and correct abnormal rhythms automatically, combining diagnosis and treatment into a single noninvasive device that continuously helps keep the heart beating normally.
