September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! 🎗️

Kids deserve honest, age appropriate information about what is happening to their body. They need to know it’s not contagious and it’s not their fault.

They deserve to be prepared for treatment, what they might experience, and what to expect.

And they need support for their feelings, coping, and recovery.

These are all topics covered in interactive workbooks to teach kids about health & anxiety The Dot Method. Comment WORKBOOK to learn more. 🤍

This weekend we gathered for my grandma’s 100th birthday.

My dad’s mom.

Months ago my dad reached out to my siblings and I to plan something for my mom’s 70th while we were together.

At the time, we didn’t expect we’d be doing it without him. 💔

But together we didn’t just celebrate my mom and my grandma, we also honored him, his legacy, and his memory.

At a lake house. With sunsets. Rainbows. Bonfires. Music. Shared stories. Spreading ashes. Laughter. Love. And more.

These moments matter. For grieving adults and kids alike. And there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Just your way.

I’m proud of us. And I know he would be, too.

I felt him all around. ❤️‍🩹

This is a question I get all of the time not only from the clients I work with but from friends and parents in the community.

First of all, it’s really normal for kids to ask these questions and when they do - it usually means they not only are ready for more information but that they feel comfortable coming to YOU for it!

So pat yourself on the back and then lean into their curiosity!

“It sounds like you’re really curious and want to know more about what it means when someone or something dies. Let’s talk about that.”

Not talking about it can make the worries grow and overreacting can make them feel like it’s wrong to wonder.

So meet them right where they are. Be direct, responsive, and truthful. And then follow their lead in terms of how much or how often they need it.

Having these conversations early and before a death occurs can help kids adjust if they are ever grievers in the future.

September is Pain Awareness Month.

Pain is a topic I have had a long standing interest in and it shows up regularly in my work, especially with kids and teens managing chronic conditions like POTS, IBD, and cancer survivorship as well as procedural pain.

Mental health is an essential part of treating pain. Not because it’s “all in someone’s head” but because the brain is part of how everyone experiences pain.

Even when there is a physical cause such as a stubbed toe, the brain has a role in calming those sensations.

Even recently my pelvic floor therapist explained that a pregnant person has heightened sensations in the pelvic area, which means constantly determining your own window of tolerance with discomfort.

Some of my favorite resources and experts in this field include:
Dr Rachel Zoffness
Meg Foundation
Curable
The Comfort Ability

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 🎗️

It’s important that people understand not just that kids can get cancer, but how cancer can affect nearly every part of a child’s life and how we can support them through it.

A childhood cancer diagnosis can mean months or years of treatment, procedures, hospital stays, changes, uncertainty, and so much more.

And survivorship doesn’t necessarily mean the experience is over. Many children continue to navigate follow-up care, monitoring, and the physical and emotional impact of what they’ve been through.

It affects not only the child with cancer but their siblings, cousins, classmates, and friends.

I created The Dot Method workbook for kids impacted by cancer - whether they are facing their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of someone they love.

It actually grew out of an activity I was using with a 3-year-old facing leukemia. 🤍

Childhood cancer may be considered “rare,” but every child facing cancer deserves information, preparation, coping support, and the opportunity to still be a kid.

My daughter asked to help with the dishes.

My response: “of course!”

We worked together to be safe and effective.

And she loved every minute.

When kids aren’t used to helping or haven’t really experienced what goes into running a house or family, they will inevitably push back when they’re suddenly asked to do “chores.”

Not to mention, chores are often associated with rewards.

And there’s a time and place for incentive, but sometimes the motivation is intrinsic. It’s feeling proud, part of a family, a team, and simply being helpful and capable.

These activities build confidence and independence far more than forcing specific daily or weekly chores.

If you have a preschool aged child consider some of the following tasks and practice together:

🤍 rinsing and/or placing dishes in the sink
🤍 transferring laundry
🤍 lining the garbage
🤍 preparing items for school, activity, or outing
🤍 packing lunch or snack
🤍 watering plants
🤍 pulling weeds
🤍 helping with meals
🤍 tidying toys or room
And more!

How does your family approach chores of daily tasks?
