James McCrae Holmes passed away on May 26, 2026 in Independence, Missouri at Centerpoint Hospital surrounded by the family that he cherished. James carried with him a gentle spirit and a heart devoted to the people and passions that mattered most. James was born in Florence, South Carolina on April 20, 1952 to Richard and Margaret (Allison) Holmes. He was raised in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where he built a life marked by service, creativity, and genuine love for those around him.

Shortly after high school James joined the US Navy, serving his country honorably. He was a proud Navy veteran with deep respect for our nation and the military.

On December 26, 1976, James was baptized into the RLDS Restoration faith. His commitment ran deep—so much so that he was ordained to the office of Priest on February 14, 1982, a Valentine's Day blessing that reflected his loving spirit. He faithfully served the Lord for many years in Pennsylvania and the surrounding states often traveling to bring ministry to many small churches in the area. When James moved to Independence, Missouri in 2021 he became a cherished member of the Outreach Restoration Branch in Independence, Missouri.

For years, James faithfully served others in his role as a cashier at Sunoco in Indiana, Pennsylvania—a quiet testimony to his reliability and friendly nature. But his true calling extended far beyond the register. Sharing his testimonies of Christ, praying for those in need, and preaching the gospel was his most important work.

James was a musician at heart. With guitar in hand, he brought joy and melody into the lives of those he loved. Whether strumming a familiar tune or exploring a new song, music was his language of the soul. Beyond the strings, James found peace on hiking trails and nature walks, where the beauty of creation spoke to his spiritual nature.

James had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He loved researching subjects such as astrophysics, quantum physics, and particle science. He was fascinated with the universe, recognizing God's hand in all of creation from the smallest particles to the immensity of space.

But perhaps his greatest joy came through his family. James was a devoted father to Celeste Holmes and Jessica (Holmes) Shiley (and son-in-law Jonathan), a doting grandfather to Tyler, Brandon, and Ryan, and a loving great-grandfather to Tyron, Melody, and Monti, all of Independence, Missouri.

He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Margaret, his brother Richard Holmes of Erie, Pennsylvania, and his grandmother Isabel (Sutter) Allison—all surely welcoming him home.

James Holmes will be remembered as the remarkably kind man that he was, dedicated to his family and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His outpour of love will remain in the hearts of those he helped along his journey.

A Celebration of Life service will be held June 13, 2026 at 6:00pm located at Outreach Restoration Branch, 723 S. Crysler Ave Independence Missouri.
