Long after the service is over, it’s often the little things that help us feel close to someone we miss.

Not sure what to say or do when attending a funeral? You’re not alone.

Funeral etiquette doesn’t have to be complicated. Arrive a few minutes early, silence your phone, dress respectfully, and most importantly, simply be present. You don’t need to find the perfect words. A hug, a kind memory, or a simple “I’m thinking of you” can mean more than you realize.

At the end of the day, showing up with kindness and respect is what matters most.

New York State Funeral Directors Association, Inc. (NYSFDA) formally installed Mark J. Nolan, owner of Nolan Funeral Home, Inc.in Northport, as President of the New York State Funeral Directors Association (NYSFDA) during the organization's Annual Banquet on August 18, 2026.

Held at the historic Canfield Casino in Saratoga Springs, the event marked the official commencement of Mark's one-year term leading the statewide organization. After the installation, Mark addressed banquet attendees, “I am proud to be on the very same stage my father, James P. Nolan Jr., stood 24 years ago. I recall him speaking about getting involved and why Association work is so important; it left an impression on me.”

“I stand before all of you feeling rather humbled,” he continued. “I love being a Funeral Director, and I am passionate about our profession. It is imperative that people like us are here to do the necessary work, and I am honored to be with you all.”
