Baby Food Pouches

I tend to be cautious about relying heavily on baby food pouches for several reasons… and now there’s another factor to consider.

A new study found microplastics and plastic-associated chemicals in every baby food pouch tested. Researchers believe some of these particles may actually be coming from the pouch packaging itself.

While these findings aren’t entirely unexpected to me, they do reinforce some of the reasons I’ve generally preferred not to rely on pouches and jars as a primary food source for babies and toddlers.

Here are a few of those reasons:

🥄 They may not reflect how we typically eat food.

Babies learn by watching us. We sit, use utensils, chew, smell, explore textures, and eat together. While pouches can be convenient, sucking pureed food from a pouch may offer fewer opportunities to practice those skills.

🍎 Many pouches are fruit-heavy.

Even when marketed as vegetables, many contain significant amounts of fruit, which may encourage a preference for sweeter flavors early on.

🌱 “Organic” doesn’t automatically mean ideal.

Many packaged baby foods are made from processed ingredients and produce that may not be the same quality some families would choose themselves at the grocery store.

👅 Babies benefit from texture.

Chewing, biting, self-feeding, and exploring different textures can play an important role in oral motor development and learning to enjoy a variety of foods.

🧃 And now we have concerns about plastic exposure.

This study found thousands of microplastic particles in some baby food pouches, adding to growing concerns about plastics in our food supply.

Every family uses convenience foods at times. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s simply to create as many opportunities as possible for children to experience a wide variety of real foods and textures.

My preference is to skip pouches altogether and focus on age-appropriate whole foods that help babies learn to chew, self-feed, and enjoy a wide variety of flavors and textures.

BREAKING NEWS:

Apparently children learn better from teachers than screens.

I know. Shocking.

According to Newsday, New York's teachers union (AFT) is supporting limits on smartphones, social media, and AI tools in schools.

My response?

It's about time.

We've spent years replacing books with screens, worksheets with apps, and teachers with technology.

Now we're surprised that attention spans, social skills, and independent thinking are suffering?

The AFT also recommends screen-free classrooms through 2nd grade.

That's a start.

But if screens aren't ideal for a 7-year-old, what magically changes in 3rd grade?

Technology is a tool.

It was never supposed to become the teacher.

Kids need books.
Kids need movement.
Kids need conversations.
Kids need boredom.
Kids need people.

And yes, I still don't think kindergarten needed a Chromebook.

Can't happen fast enough.

“A New Approach to Childhood Vaccines?”

On May 29, 2026 The White House announced a review of the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule with the goal of bringing it more in line with schedules used in other developed countries.

For many parents, this is being viewed as a step toward greater medical freedom and more individualized healthcare decisions.

What this means:

✔️ Vaccines are still available

✔️ Parents can continue to vaccinate according to current recommendations

✔️ School vaccine requirements do not automatically change

✔️ Federal agencies will review which vaccines should be routinely recommended for all children and which may be better suited for individual risk-based decisions

Supporters believe this approach:
• Gives families more choice
• Encourages shared decision-making between parents and healthcare providers
• Recognizes that not every child has the same medical risks
• Brings U.S. recommendations closer to those used in many other developed nations

The review process is still underway, but many families who have long advocated for greater involvement in medical decisions are welcoming the conversation.

****This does not remove vaccines. It opens the door to re-evaluating whether every vaccine should be routinely recommended for every child, or whether some decisions are better made by parents and their healthcare providers.***

Everyone is talking about what AI can DO.
Almost nobody is talking about what AI REQUIRES.

AI runs on massive data centers — huge warehouse-like buildings filled with servers running 24/7.

These facilities use enormous amounts of:
• Electricity
• Water
• Land
• Cooling systems

Now researchers are studying whether these centers may also create “data heat islands” — areas where waste heat from the buildings could actually warm surrounding communities.

As AI rapidly expands, people living near these sites are beginning to raise concerns about:
• Strain on local power grids
• Heavy water use
• Noise pollution
• Land development
• Environmental impact

AI is no longer just a tech story. It’s becoming an infrastructure, energy, and environmental story too.

The question is no longer only: “What can AI do?”
It’s also: “What will it cost communities to power it?

WE NEED TO TALK! …. because too many of my young patients are doing this!

Too many children are worried about “fixing” their skin before they even hit puberty!

Elementary school kids are now asking for:
*Retinol* Anti-aging serums *Exfoliating acids *Multi-step skincare routines

Because they saw them on TikTok, influencers, social media, and friends.

And the problem isn’t just the products.
It’s the message:
“Your skin needs fixing.”

Children are learning beauty routines before they are learning confidence.

Many of these products are designed for adult skin and may cause:
• Irritation • Dryness • Rashes • Damage to the skin barrier

Children do NOT need complicated skincare routines.

Your child does not need anti-aging products! And that is what is being marketed to them on social media.

PAY ATTENTION to what your child asks you to buy for them. READ LABELS.

They need play, sunshine, confidence, and the message that healthy skin does not need to be perfect.
