Our Rollers & Sitters Baby Development Class is starting WEEKLY on Thursday, September 10th!

Designed for babies 3–8 months, this weekly class is all about supporting your baby’s development through purposeful play, movement, and age-appropriate activities - while giving parents ideas you can easily carry over at home.

Led by pediatric occupational therapist Lizzy Sullivan at TOTs Therapy.

We tend to take over the second it gets hard or messy!

But if we always load the fork for them, they miss out on practicing the hardest, and most important, part of the skill.

Instead, slow down. Give them foods that are easier to spear, expect lots of trial and error, and let the learning happen.

When they are over it and get frustrated - they will tell you when it’s time to step in!

Sometimes the biggest changes aren’t during the feed - they’re what you see afterward.

This sweet 6-week-old fell asleep at the end of our session with:
• A relaxed, open neck
• A calm, regulated body
• Their tongue naturally resting suctioned to the roof of their mouth

When babies are working so hard to breastfeed, we often see tension throughout the entire body - not just in the mouth. As oral motor skills improve and the body begins to relax, babies can find more efficient, comfortable movement patterns to support feeding.

Every baby is different, but these quiet moments can tell us so much about how their little bodies are feeling.

When feeding challenges are particularly complex, collaboration can make all the difference.

We love getting the chance to work together on some of our more challenging little ones. Combining Julia’s feeding and oral motor work with Carrie’s craniosacral therapy allows us to look at feeding from different angles and work together toward the same goal: helping babies feel more comfortable in their bodies and be more successful with feeding.

We love a team approach, especially when a baby needs a little extra support. 🤍

Most parents expect feeding therapy to focus only on just bottle or breastfeeding - but there’s so much more to it!

A typical session may include movement, positioning, hands-on techniques (like gentle infant massage and cranial sacral therapy techniques), mouth muscle exercises (oral motor work), developmental activities, AND breast or bottle feeding - all of which is tailored to your baby’s specific needs in that moment.

Throughout the session, we also spend time coaching and educating parents so you feel confident carrying these strategies back home.

Every activity has a purpose: addressing the why behind your baby’s feeding challenges to make feeding easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable for the whole family.

Kids often become attached to the brand, color, and packaging of a food. Before long, they can get very stuck on THIS type of chicken nugget, or THAT specific type of cheddar puffs. Then when you pull out a new brand, even if the food itself is almost identical, they may fully reject it based on the new package itself.

So instead, serve their yogurt in a bowl. Pour crackers or cheddar bunnies into a snack container instead of handing over the box.

When the packaging isn’t the first thing they see, kids are more likely to notice the similarities between foods rather than the differences. That makes it easier to accept different brands, store brands, or different foods.

It’s a simple habit that can go a long way toward building flexibility around food.

Many parents worry that feeding therapy means someone will pressure their child to eat.

That’s not how we work.

Children learn best when they feel safe. We focus on understanding why eating is difficult - whether that’s sensory processing, oral motor skills, anxiety around food, limited food flexibility, or simply needing more practice with the right support.

Progress doesn’t happen by forcing bites. It happens by helping children feel safe and successful around food.

Feeding therapy can help!

Picky eating can be part of typical development, but sometimes it becomes more than just a phase.

If meals have become stressful, your child is eating a very limited variety of foods, or you’re avoiding restaurants, vacations, or family dinners because of food, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Self-feeding with a spoon is a learning process!

As the bowl gets emptier, scooping becomes harder. It’s completely normal for little hands to jump in! That isn’t “giving up” - it’s problem-solving. Plus it has its own developmental benefits!

Using their hands helps children:
✨ Explore textures
✨ Gives positive, child-led sensory input
✨ Improve hand-eye coordination
✨ Practice grasping and manipulating food
✨ Stay engaged at mealtime

The goal isn’t a perfectly clean spoon every time - it’s learning. Let the spoon and the hands work together. Both are helping build lifelong feeding skills.

“Dr. Brown’s Anti-Colic Bottles prevent colic and decrease air ingestion with the internal venting system.”

❌ Factually true? Nope!

The idea behind the internal vent system is that it helps reduce air entering the bottle as milk is removed. However, all bottles have a venting system. Even so, that doesn’t mean it prevents babies from swallowing air.

In reality, the biggest contributor to air ingestion is often how the baby latches and sucks. If the baby doesn’t seal their lips around the bottle and hold the ni**le with their tongue, they are going to ingest air - no matter the bottle.

So - does it “prevent air ingestion” (and therefore, “colic”)? No bottle can make that promise.

The takeaway?

Certain bottles may promote better latching and sucking skills that decrease air ingestion - but all bottles have a functional venting system.

And bottles can’t replace addressing the underlying feeding skills.
