For a long time, nutrition has occupied a surprisingly small place in conventional medical training.

According to HHS, as recently as 2024, 75% of U.S. medical schools required no clinical nutrition classes, and surveyed medical students reported receiving an average of about 1.2 hours of formal nutrition education per year.

Now, 76 medical schools across 36 states have committed to significantly expanding that education, including our own University of Maryland School of Medicine. Not perfect, but hey, at least it’s a good start!

And as a chiropractor, I think this is a really encouraging direction.

One of the foundational ideas behind holistic healthcare is that the body does not operate in separate compartments. What you eat influences the raw materials available for tissue repair, muscle function, energy production, immune activity and neurological function. Sleep matters, movement matters, and stress matters. The environment you place your body in every day matters.

That does not make nutrition a replacement for everything; it simply means we should be asking a bigger question than, “What do we do once someone is sick?”

We should also be asking what helps the body function well in the first place.

The more healthcare professionals are trained to have that conversation with patients, the better!

The late 1800s were apparently a pretty productive time. 😂

The telephone arrived in 1876. The first patented automobile followed in 1886. And in 1895, modern chiropractic care entered the chat.

Chiropractic traces its beginnings to Davenport, Iowa, where D.D. Palmer performed what is widely recognized as the first chiropractic adjustment. From there, an entirely new profession began developing around a pretty fascinating idea: that the spine is more than a stack of bones, and that its movement and function have an important relationship with the nervous system.

More than 130 years later, the tools have definitely changed. We have better imaging, better technology, and a much deeper understanding of biomechanics and neurology than anyone had in 1895.

But the curiosity behind chiropractic still feels very familiar around here:

How is the spine functioning?
How is the body adapting?
And instead of simply chasing where something hurts, what can we learn about the pattern underneath it?

The telephone, the automobile, and chiropractic.

We’d say we’re in pretty good company! 😉

Nearly 60% of what Americans eat is estimated to come from ultra-processed foods, yet we’ve never had a single federal standard defining exactly what qualifies as one.

HHS and USDA are now working to change that, submitting the country’s first proposed uniform definition of ultra-processed foods for final review.
So why does a definition matter?

Because if researchers, regulators, food companies, and consumers are all using different criteria, it becomes much harder to study these foods consistently, create meaningful policy or even help families understand what they are buying.

And this is not a small corner of the American diet. Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods is linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and may other chronic health concerns.

From a holistic healthcare perspective, I think this conversation is long overdue. We spend enormous amounts of time and money managing chronic disease AFTER it develops. We should be equally interested in the everyday environment the body is being asked to function in, including what we are eating several times a day.

Defining the problem clearly is a pretty good place to start!
