This right here! I want to focus a bit more on the medical community.
Some days, I feel like I’m screaming at the top of my lungs and no one hears me. The system is broken, and every time I try to help fix it, I’m knocked down by peers who refuse to look at why I do what I do.
I work hard to provide the best possible care, yet there is a constant assumption that because I support a woman’s right and ability to birth at home, I cannot also provide high-quality, evidence-based care.
We are often talked about as though we are dangerous, and when families and home birth providers seek additional medical care or transfer for additional support, they are treated like failures and told, “This is why home birth is unsafe,” instead of recognizing the judgment and skill it takes to know when additional resources are needed. A transfer should be viewed as an appropriate and responsible use of resources — not as a failure or an opportunity for criticism.
What keeps me going are my clients. Watching them discover their strength and confidence is incredible. Seeing what they are capable of reminds me why this work matters so much. Thank you for trusting me to be a part of such an important part of your life!
I do want to say that this is not the entire medical community. I have worked with many supportive providers who truly care about families and collaboration. I also have a growing number of medical professionals choosing home birth for their own families, and that means a lot to me.
For the honor of my sister midwives.
