September is Healthy Aging Month ๐๏ธ๐
As we age, taking care of our eyes is an important part of taking care of our overall health. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, 1 in 6 Americans age 65 and older has a vision impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The risk of developing eye disease also increases with age, making routine eye care and early detection especially important.
๐ Know the signs. Some common symptoms we see with age-related eye conditions can include:
๐น Cataracts: Cloudy or blurred vision, faded or dull colors, difficulty with light or night vision, or seeing halos around lights.
๐น Macular Degeneration: Blurry or fuzzy central vision, dark spots or shadowing, difficulty seeing in low light, or faded/washed-out colors.
๐น Diabetic Retinopathy: Blurry vision, floaters, difficulty with night vision, or faded/washed-out colors.
๐น Glaucoma: Loss of peripheral (side) vision, eye pain or headaches, blurred vision, or seeing halos around lights.
Some eye diseases can also have a genetic or family history component. Be sure to let us know about any eye conditions that run in your family and keep your medical history up to date. This helps us look at your overall eye health during your routine exam and determine if additional testing or monitoring may be appropriate.
Many eye diseases require more than a standard vision check. A dilated eye exam and/or additional medical testing may be needed to get a closer look at the retina and other vital components of the eye. Early detection can help us identify changes sooner and, in many cases, take steps to help prevent vision impairment or even blindness.
๐ Healthy aging includes healthy vision. Don't wait until you notice a change in your sight to prioritize your eye health.
