In just one month, our community will come together for an evening of generosity, elegance, and hope. 🎗️

Denise has seen firsthand the difference philanthropy makes. After getting involved as a foundation volunteer, she was inspired to join the Barnes-Jewish St. Peters & Progress West Foundation Board, where she now serves on the Finance Committee and proudly chairs this year’s Health, Healing & Hope Gala.

“What keeps me passionate is knowing that the foundation helps make meaningful programs, services, and initiatives possible for our hospitals and the communities they serve,” Denise shared.

This year’s gala will help fund programs that go beyond traditional hospital budgets, including a scholarship program and a beautiful outdoor healing garden at Progress West Hospital. The garden will provide a welcoming space for patients, families, visitors, and staff, creating a lasting impact for years to come. 💐

Join Denise and fellow supporters on September 26 as we celebrate the power of giving and invest in the future of health care in our community. We can’t wait to see you there! ❤️

Angie’s leg pain affected how she stood, how she worked, and how she lived. As the discomfort became more consistent and debilitating, she even had to walk away from her job managing a clothing store—a role she loved.

“I couldn’t stand without having my left leg propped up,” Angie says. “I called it my flamingo stance. The pain was excruciating. At that point it starts affecting who you are. You aren’t as happy.”

After more than a decade of chronic pain and limited mobility, everything changed when Angie came to Barnes‑Jewish St. Peters Hospital. There, a WashU Medicine spine surgeon performed the total posterior spine (TOPS) procedure—a newer, FDA-approved, motion-preserving alternative to spinal fusion.

Unlike traditional fusion, which permanently joins bones, the TOPS system stabilizes the spine while preserving natural movement, helping reduce strain on other parts of the spine.

The relief came quickly after the operation.

“I was up on my feet in a week,” Angie says. She is now continuing physical therapy to rebuild strength and balance.

“The pain that was debilitating is no longer there, and I can move easier,” she says. “I was too young to feel that old. This surgery gave me back precious time.”

For Dr. Michael DeFilippo, a Washu Medicine physician at Progress West Hospital, the path to emergency medicine began long before medical school.

“It started in the back of an ambulance,” he said. “I spent nearly a decade as a paramedic, and the physicians who mentored me showed me what this work could be.” 🚑

Today, Dr. DeFilippo brings that experience to the Emergency Department at Progress West Hospital, where he enjoys caring for patients through every type of emergency.

“The people, hands down,” he said when asked what he enjoys most about working in the ER. “It’s really a team sport. I love the range—reassuring someone who’s worried but well one minute, and resuscitating a critically ill patient the next.”

His background includes training at large academic medical centers, working in rural critical access hospitals, and serving alongside local fire departments and ambulance districts as an EMS physician. He believes that diverse experience benefits every patient.

For Dr. DeFilippo, helping patients feel calm starts with treating them like people.

“I talk to people like people, not like a diagnosis,” he said. “I slow down, explain things in plain language and find some common ground.”

His philosophy is simple: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Outside of work, Dr. DeFilippo enjoys spending time with his fiancée, Hollie, their dogs Ellie and Rue, and their cat Dale. Whether they’re hiking, kayaking, or relaxing with reality TV, he values making the most of time together. 🛶 🐶

Thank you to Dr. DeFelippo and all of our WashU Medicine Physicians who provide the exceptional care in our Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital and Progress West Hospital Emergency Departments! 🏥

Meet Dr. Philip Chan, a WashU Medicine emergency medicine physician and Medical Director of the Progress West Emergency Department.

Throughout medical school, mentors inspired Dr. Chan’s path to emergency medicine by showing him how we can care for anyone, anywhere, and anytime. That perspective continues to shape his work today. “We are often seen as a safety net in our health care system that’s available 24/7 without fail," he shared. "And to me, that’s an inspiring charge.”

As a WashU physician, Dr. Chan says one of the biggest benefits for patients is access to specialized expertise and collaboration. “We are trained to take care of the sickest patients, and we have access to a comprehensive array of specialists with the ability to refer the most complex cases to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, our flagship academic center,” he explained.

When caring for patients during stressful situations, Dr. Chan believes listening comes first. "Having a thorough understanding of a patient's symptoms and what they are experiencing can allow us to order the right tests, as well as ensure we provide the right medication to help their symptoms."

His philosophy of care is simple: “Think of everyone coming through our doors as if they were a good friend or family member.”

Outside the hospital, Dr. Chan enjoys spending time with his two young boys, playing sports, riding bikes, and wrangling the family’s two dogs.

Meet Dr. Joe Kohout, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital.

For Dr. Kohout, emergency medicine was always about serving others. A St. Peters native and O’Fallon High School graduate, he knew that he wanted to return home and care for the community that helped shape him after completing medical school and residency training.

“I chose Emergency Medicine because of the variety, the strong bonds formed from working as a team, and as a way to help people when they seem to need it most.”

That commitment to helping others guides every patient interaction. Dr. Kohout approaches care with the same compassion and respect he would want for his own family.

“I try to treat every patient as I would want a member of my family treated. I try to explain all the details of care and management clearly and with empathy.”

As part of the WashU Medicine team, Dr. Kohout values the shared commitment to excellence and the opportunity to help train the next generation of emergency medicine physicians.

When he’s not caring for patients, you’ll likely find him spending time with family, cooking, or cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

We’re proud to have Dr. Kohout and the WashU Medicine emergency medicine team serving patients at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital.

For months, Khalid chalked up his chest pain to the cold weather and the toll of travel.

At 75, he was visiting family in St. Louis and assumed the discomfort that came and went was nothing more than fatigue. He wasn't worried. He felt fine, mostly.

Then one morning, the pain got worse.

Khalid came to the Emergency Department at Progress West Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a heart attack caused by partially blocked coronary arteries. He was hospitalized for monitoring and underwent heart catheterization—a procedure that allows physicians to examine blood flow through the heart—performed by interventional cardiologist Sanjaya Saheta, MD.

What the catheterization revealed required further intervention. Khalid was referred to David Kardesch, MD, a BJC Medical Group interventional cardiologist, who placed three stents in Khalid's arteries during a single procedure—restoring blood flow and preventing long-term heart damage.

Through it all, Khalid kept a quiet faith in his care team.

"I trust when I go to the doctor because they're experts and they know this stuff," said Khalid.

He was discharged on January 2nd and hasn't looked back. Today, he takes daily walks and exercises with fellow seniors at a facility near Progress West—20 minutes on, 15 minutes rest, 20 minutes more.

"The care I received at Progress West felt different from care I've received at other hospitals," Khalid says. "You can tell they provide care from the heart."
