This weekend, our WashU Medicine Physical Therapy clinicians, family and friends proudly participated in the Walk to Defeat ALS in support of individuals and families affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

At WashU Medicine, we're honored to care for people living with ALS through compassionate, interdisciplinary rehabilitation while advancing research to improve treatments and, one day, find a cure. Breakthroughs in ALS research are creating new hope for patients and families. A recent article from The New York Times highlights the growing impact of tofersen (Qalsody), a treatment designed for people with SOD1-associated ALS.

WashU Medicine Physical Therapy is proud to be part of an ongoing physical therapy clinical trial studying rehabilitation outcomes for some patients receiving tofersen. Our faculty and clinicians are committed to advancing evidence-based care that helps people with ALS maximize strength, mobility and quality of life.

Research moves forward through collaboration, innovation and the courage of patients and families who participate in clinical trials. We are honored to contribute to this important work.

The drug is for a small subset of patients. But evidence that breathing and strength can get better for some of them is remarkable for a paralyzing, usually fatal disease.

Today, March 6th, is World Lymphedema Day! 🌎

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid under your skin. The body’s lymphatic system, when working normally, acts like a waste removal system, eliminating this fluid. This system also helps to fight infection. When your lymphatic system is disrupted, fluid can “back up,” causing swelling in the arms, legs, head, neck, or trunk and can also increase your chances of developing a skin infection (cellulitis). Lymphedema is common in patients with cancer following surgeries that involve lymph node removal and radiation treatments. It may also result from a surgical procedure or inherited condition or occur as a long-term complication of another disease process.

About our Lymphedema Management Program:
Our clinic provides comprehensive rehabilitation to treat patients with a wide range of conditions that present with swelling and mobility problems. We treat not only lymphedema of the head, neck, trunk, arms, and legs, but also can comprehensively treat concurrent musculoskeletal conditions with highly trained movement oriented staff.

We provide each patient with:
👉Bioimpedance spectroscopy at regular intervals to evaluate fluid under the skin.
👉One-on-one patient care at every appointment
👉A comprehensive one-hour initial evaluation
👉A personalized treatment plan- developed by your therapist to help you meet your individual rehabilitation goals
👉Personal communication between your physical therapist and your physician

Our Approach:
Our certified lymphedema therapists are trusted experts in evaluating the movement system and in treating identified movement impairments. Our focused treatment will help you reduce swelling, improve mobility, and provide education for long term management to reach your optimum functional capabilities. We will empower you by providing the education you need to understand and correct your movement impairment to meet your personal goals.
