The dog days of summer can be downright unbearable. But we want to share some tips for staying cool in the summer heat, especially if you are spending time outdoors.

Inside, keep blinds closed during the day and avoid using your oven if you are able.

Outside, limit activities to early morning or late evening, wear lightweight clothing, and seek shade when you can.

As always, drink plenty of water and enjoy snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus fruits, which have high water content to help you stay hydrated.

Did you know? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., with the highest rates occurring in adults over the age of 60. During UV Awareness Month, here are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself from the summer sun.

• Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head and neck.
• Keep arms and legs covered.
• Wear UV-blocking wraparound or oversized sunglasses.

Across all our Southview Senior Communities, we provide a range of opportunities for residents to build and maintain social connections. While social wellness is important at every age, it is particularly important for seniors, as it:

• Combats loneliness and depression
• Stimulates memory and lowers the risk of cognitive decline
• Builds a sense of purpose
• Promotes physical activities and physical health

During Social Wellness Month and all throughout the year, we take pride in watching our residents socialize, have fun, and live their best lives.

Hydration is always important, especially in the summer—and particularly for seniors. Many older adults experience issues with dehydration, so we’ve put together some ideas to help stay hydrated as summer heats up.

• Have a glass of water to start the day and/or with every meal.
• Infuse water with various fruits or flavor drops to add a hint of taste.
• Enjoy water-rich foods like cucumbers, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and watermelon.
• Sip water throughout the day, whether or not you feel thirsty.

Cheers to staying hydrated and keeping your body functioning its best! 💧

Vroom, vroom! Some of our Oak Park residents went on a recent group outing to Stillwater to see the local car show. We took two buses into downtown and couldn’t have asked for a better day. The ride and the weather were perfect.

After checking out all the cars, we had some extra time and stopped at P.D. Pappy’s Bar & Grill. We enjoyed ice-cold pop while sitting on the deck by the water, taking in the beautiful afternoon.

For a recent crafting activity, residents at Oak Park worked with little diamonds to create mandala art. This intricate method took a lot of time and concentration, as it features symmetrical designs and geometric shapes organized in a circle.

Residents worked so hard on these creations and were so focused on their projects. They turned out so beautiful!

From popcorn to corn on the cob to tortilla chips and more, corn is a favorite, versatile vegetable that offers a range of health benefits for seniors.

• Rich in antioxidants that protect the eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration
• Contains B vitamins and potassium to support brain function and regulate blood pressure, respectively
• Provides energy but has a low glycemic profile to prevent blood sugar spikes
• Contains insoluble fiber, which prevents common digestive issues

Whether at a barbecue or making dinner at home, be sure to celebrate Corn Month by adding a side of this golden grain.

What’s your favorite way to eat corn? Let us know in the comments.

Have you seen our lost shaker of salt?

Local musician Todd Anderson, “Twin City Todd,” recently joined us at Oak Park to entertain us with this Jimmy Buffett Tribute.

We enjoyed tropical mocktails while singing and dancing to the music. Residents dressed in their best Hawaiian shirts and beachwear to fit right in with the laid-back, island-inspired vibe. What a fun afternoon!
