Memorial Day is a time to mourn and honor those who who have died in service to our country.
What does it mean to mourn and to honor? Mourning is an absolutely necessary and painful step in processing and moving forward in life.
Sometimes mourning is about the death of a person. Sometimes we are mourning the story we had written in our head of what we thought our life would be like, of who would be in it and how they would interact with us.
Part of mourning is fighting against the truth and refusing to see life on life's terms. If this goes on too long, we steal all of our energy, all of our joy, all of our peace.
So maybe it is time to switch from mourning to honoring. To honoring ourselves by allowing ourselves to create not a perfect life, but a life well lived. Maybe it is time to have courage on a daily basis to honor the day and make the most of it.
Maybe it is time to recognize where we are keeping ourselves trapped and blaming others. To be brave enough to look at the role we play in our own stuckness and misery. To honor ourselves and our life enough to embrace it, to look for the good, and to create the good if needed.
On this day of remembrance, mourn and honor those that have given their life for our country. And then remember that if your are mourning your life as it currently is, that maybe it is time to look at your personal patterns that are keeping you stuck.
Be brave. You are worth your own effort!
