A dream more than 50 years in the making came true for Bruce through hospice care.

Bruce, a St. Croix Hospice patient in Lincoln, Nebraska, taught himself to play guitar at 14 and spent decades dreaming of playing with a band.

With support from his care team, Bruce recently took the stage with local cover band Hardwood Dash, surrounded by his wife, Cindy, his daughter and friends and family who traveled from Nebraska, Colorado and South Dakota.

Twelve St. Croix Hospice team members also attended, wearing custom "Bruce's Support Squad" T-shirts featuring the periwinkle esophageal cancer awareness ribbon.

When asked why playing with a band meant so much to him, Bruce said:

"I like the sound of it so much when it's more than just me."

For one unforgettable evening, Bruce's lifelong dream became a shared celebration of music, support and love.

For those unfamiliar with hospice, the idea can feel frightening.

Making that decision can feel like it cements end of life for your loved one. Other times, our fears become louder — and we tell ourselves we have to rely on external support.

But hospice isn’t your fear. And it isn’t there to make life worse.

Families who take that step often say:

“Why didn’t we learn about hospice sooner?”
“I wish our doctor would've said something.”
“Hospice allowed me to rest and still take care of my loved one.”

Because hospice is compassionate care — focused on comfort, support and helping families navigate each moment.

Wound care isn't just clinical — it's personal.

This month highlights the importance of attentive, compassionate care in supporting healing and overall well-being.

As patients in hospice approach end of life, they may be more at risk of developing chronic wounds.

That's why our care teams include board-certified wound and ostomy clinicians.

Grief often shows up in ways people don’t expect — and long after others think it should’ve passed.

Bereavement support provides space to process loss at your own pace, without pressure or timelines.

Having someone to talk to, or simply a place to be understood, can make a meaningful difference.

You don’t have to navigate grief on your own.

People rarely regret learning too much — but often regret learning too late.

Understanding hospice earlier gives you the opportunity to make informed, thoughtful decisions about care.

If it aligns with your goals, it can provide meaningful support. If it doesn’t, you still have clarity.

Either way, having the information matters.

If end-of-life conversations happened earlier, hospice would feel less like a sudden decision.

It'd be something people already understand, not something they're trying to learn in a short amount of time.

Earlier conversations don't change the outcome, but they do change the experience. Families have more time to ask questions, align on goals and make decisions with clarity instead of urgency.

That shift can reduce uncertainty, ease emotional strain and help families feel more confident in the care being chosen, whether that's curative or comfort.

We’re grateful to have helped fulfill Bruce Mavis’ final wish during hospice care — to perform a few songs live. Bringing peace, comfort and dignity to our patients is at the heart of what we do. Bruce’s story is a powerful reminder of what hospice truly means.

It's often asked how much time left a family member has. However, it's also important to ask, "How do I want to spend time with my loved one?"

As uncomfortable and heartbreaking as the end of life is, it's always a reminder to never take what we love for granted.

It reminds us to stay present, especially for those who have more time as well.

Make the phone call and check up on someone.

Say I love you even when you're hesitant. Take the leap.

Between 2023 and 2025, 95% of people said they would probably or definitely recommend hospice care.

It’s a number that often surprises people — especially given the hesitation that can come with the word “hospice.”

For many families, that experience shifts from uncertainty to relief once support begins.

If hospice has ever felt unclear or intimidating, it may be worth learning about before an emergency arises.

Did you know hospice care supports caregivers?

While hospice is mainly focused on caring for your loved one, respite care is designed to support the caregiver — providing short-term relief from day-to-day responsibilities.

This allows caregivers to step away and recharge, whether that means attending a child’s game, running errands or simply taking a needed break.
