Their health system sold the hospice program they'd built their careers on to a for-profit company. Neither was happy with the changes, so one tried staying and one left. Neither move closed the gap between the work they were doing and the work they knew was possible.

Then a colleague said it out loud: "You can start your own business. How hard could it be?" Kerry Keenan and Jill Schoenecker actually did it. What started as a whiteboard in Jill's living room is now Beyond Hospice, a nonprofit hospice program and division of Episcopal Homes.

Sometimes staying isn't the answer and leaving isn't either. There's a third option, but nobody hands it to you.
