As social mammals, horses are highly sensitive to the emotions and intentions of other herd members as well as predators. This translates to an ability to read subtle changes in humans. Horses are highly effective at sensing the attitudes, physiological states, and behaviors of others. They demonstrate that connection requires the ability and or willingness to be present and regulated. When we are in the presence of horses we are reminded that what we bring to a relationship is not only influenced by our nervous system and the nervous system of others. To truly co-regulation we need to embody a state that encourages and supports calmness. Horses ask that we are in the present moment with them communicating messages of safety.
