🎬 A little behind the scenes from an awesome day at our brand-new Simulation Center!

Our first-year fellows, Kyle and Taylor, joined our hospitalists and simulation team for a day of e-simulation filming, clinical learning, teamwork, and plenty of laughs along the way. 🩺✨

From preparing the scenarios to stepping into the action, it was so fun watching our fellows learn, teach, collaborate, and bring these cases to life.

We’re excited about all the possibilities our new simulation space creates for learning and innovation in Pediatric Hospital Medicine!

And because no filming day is complete without a few outtakes… 😂 Make sure you watch until the end!

Absolutely. Here’s a version without em dashes that reads naturally:

Grateful for the opportunity to represent the Kaiser Oakland Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at this year’s Pediatric Fellowship Directors Summer Meeting.

Our Program Director, Dr. Miranda Kane, who also served as Chair of the Planning Committee, and Associate Program Director, Dr. Kristie Manning, joined fellowship leaders from across the country to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen the future of Pediatric Hospital Medicine education.

One of the highlights was spending time with an incredible group of women leaders in Pediatric Hospital Medicine from across Northern California. The collaboration, mentorship, and friendships within our regional PHM community continue to inspire us and make us better educators, leaders, and physicians.

We are excited to bring new ideas back to our fellowship and continue building strong partnerships across the country and throughout Northern California. Here’s to advancing Pediatric Hospital Medicine together. 💙

Community first, always. 🍦 Our annual PHM Fellowship resident social brought everyone together over sundaes at Fenton’s, then we headed to Doña where our fellows joined the ward rep meeting and shared their input on the program. Good food, great people, and fellows helping shape what comes next.

She had a baby mid-fellowship, earned her MPH, and still absolutely crushed it. Congratulations Dr. Lauren Rivkin, PHM Class of 2026 — we’re so proud and will miss you more than words can say. Chicago is lucky to have you. 🎉👶

…and these two are going places. 👆✨

So fun connecting at the APPD Spring Conference in Denver! ✨

Nothing better than learning + catching up with great people in pediatric education. Loved seeing our Kaiser Oakland Pediatrics Residency crew, reconnecting with collaborators from Valley Children’s Healthcare, and running into familiar faces now doing amazing things at Massachusetts General Hospital Pediatrics Residency.

These are the connections that make this work so meaningful 🙌

Did you know?

According to publicly available 2024 data from the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), Kaiser Permanente Northern California hospitals account for:

• 26% of licensed pediatric inpatient beds (NICU, PICU, and acute care combined)
• 14% of pediatric discharges among regional children’s hospitals

Many of our pediatric units are embedded within larger medical centers and may appear smaller individually. Viewed collectively across the region, however, the impact is significant.

With approximately 1 in 3 children in Northern California covered by Kaiser Permanente, our responsibility is substantial.

Training in this system means learning to deliver high-volume, high-impact care across a uniquely integrated regional network — close to home, community-based, and team-driven.

If you’re looking for fellowship training grounded in systems thinking, regional coordination, and real-world inpatient volume, we’d love to connect.

So great hosting a joint education didactic at Kaiser Oakland with PHM fellows from Kaiser, UCSF, and Stanford.
An afternoon of shared learning and lively discussion on:
🧠 Antibiotic Dogmas — teaching old dogma new tricks in pediatric antibiotics
🚑 Transport Medicine — what happens between hospitals matters
⚖️ Cognitive Bias — stopping shortcuts from cutting lives short by mitigating heuristics
Grateful for this collaborative PHM community and the future leaders in the room. PatientSafety JEDI

Mock code on pediatric sepsis with our residents and fellow 👏
Practicing the push-pull method for rapid fluid bolus delivery—and more importantly, practicing how we think about sepsis.

At Kaiser Northern California, sepsis isn’t a one-hospital problem.
We have a regional collaborative with a shared protocol across all EDs and pediatric wards, including overhead sepsis alerts, so teams speak the same language when minutes matter.

Our guiding principles:
🧠 “Prove to me it’s not sepsis.”
🎂 “More birthdays.”

We walked through this regional protocol during today’s mock code—because systems, teamwork, and early action save lives.
