When Vicky Pan was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, she turned to Sutter's Alta Bates Summit Medical Center for help and a path forward. That path led her to become the first woman in the U.S. outside of a clinical trial to undergo a single-port robotic-assisted ni**le-sparing mastectomy.

This groundbreaking procedure offers women an approach that can help minimize visible scarring and preserve ni**le sensation, supporting not only physical healing, but a woman’s sense of self.

Vicky Pan, who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, underwent the first robotic single-port ni**le-sparing mastectomy performed in the U.S. by a robot named Carol. The robot was donated by a grieving husband who lost his wife to breast cancer.

During National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month, we’re recognizing the ICU teams across Sutter Health who provide lifesaving care during patients’ most vulnerable moments. 💙

From trauma and respiratory failure to infection and organ failure, critical care demands extraordinary coordination, clinical expertise and compassion. Through early recognition and rapid treatment, Sutter clinicians helped save 772 lives in the past year among patients with septic shock—the most severe form of sepsis.

In 2026, multiple Sutter hospitals were also recognized by Healthgrades for superior outcomes in critical care and sepsis treatment.

Big milestone for surgical innovation at Sutter!

Surgeons at Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center and Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center recently completed their first urological surgeries using a single incision with the da Vinci Single-Port robotic system. This advanced robotic technology allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through one small, single opening rather than multiple incisions.
