Discover the Creative Process Behind the Art Therapist!

EBAT Art Therapist Jess Matos shares her reflections on creativity, healing, and the therapeutic process with clients.

🎨 What is your approach/style as an Art Therapist working with clients?

“ I believe art is a universal language, one that connects us beyond words. Each session is an open, creative space where art becomes play and exploration without pressure or expectation. Through the process, thoughts and emotions rise to the surface, creating space for insight, reflection, and self-discovery. My role is to hold a safe, supportive space and gently guide you through what is present, what is emerging, and what is possible. You don’t have to do it alone.”

🫶 What do you love most about the work you do as an Art Therapist?

“There is something profoundly powerful about watching someone move from disconnection or self-doubt into clarity, expression, and empowerment through art. Through creating, people rediscover meaning, purpose, and who they truly are. Witnessing that transformation never gets old.”

🖌️ Tell us how your personal Art supports your own Well-being.

“My paintings and inner exploratory process live between control and surrender, the known and the unknown. I create intuitively, allowing each piece to unfold layer by layer. It’s a process of trusting, exploring, and making the invisible visible. I invite myself to question, feel, and find my own meaning."

🖌️ Therapeutic art making can deepen the clinical process beyond words.

Learn more about our Therapeutic Art Making in Clinical Practice for Non-Art Therapists.

What may feel difficult for clients to verbalize can sometimes become more accessible through image, color, movement, and creative expression.

Art making offers a bottom-up, somatic approach that can support safety, communication, emotional processing, insight, and connection within the therapeutic relationship.

🎨 Learning Objectives:

-Identify and describe the role of art-making as a theoretically grounded clinical intervention.
-State the difference between “art therapy” and “therapeutic art making”.
-Identify when certain art materials are appropriate for clients based on presenting issues.
-Identify arts-based treatment goals for clients based on the Expressive Therapies Continuum.
-Learn and experience 4 art activities appropriate for use with varied clinical populations.

We customize our professional development workshops to cater to the population you work with.

Shout out to Fred Finch Youth Center and Family Services , where we provided this professional development training to their clinicians.

This was co-facilitated by Tonia Herrero, MPS, ATR-BC, LCAT, ATCS, and Theresa Hong, MPS, ATR, Psychosis expert.

We gave clinicians hands-on experience with creative interventions that can be thoughtfully integrated into clinical work with individuals experiencing psychosis symptoms.

If you would like to bring Therapeutic Art for Non-Art Therapists training to your agency, check out our website to learn more!

What a record executive shared about the power of Art & creating!

“Art allows people a way to dream outside of their struggle.”

This quote reflects Simmons’ view of art as both a personal escape and a tool for envisioning a better future. He describes art as a kind of “pressure valve” and “ladder,” something that helps people survive the present while imagining and creating the life they want.

In many ways, this mirrors the heart of art therapy. 🎨

Sometimes people cannot simply think or push their way through anxiety, depression, trauma, or emotional overwhelm. Art offers another language.

Through imagery, color, texture, and creative expression, individuals can safely explore emotions, release inner pressure, process experiences, and reconnect with hope, meaning, and possibility.

The emphasis on “dream” rather than “think” is powerful.
It gives permission to imagine beyond current circumstances.

To envision healing and reconnect with parts of the self that may have felt silenced, disconnected, or lost.

🖌️ Art therapy is not about artistic skill or perfection.

It is about expression, reflection, imagination, & transformation within a supportive therapeutic space.

At EBAT, our art therapists believe creativity can support emotional healing, resilience, self-understanding, and moving through limiting beliefs.
