Objectives

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has a series of major objectives:

to provide and stimulate programs for research and education

to promote and encourage publication of research findings and other literature pertaining to podiatric sports medicine

to provide a consultative service for those persons engaged in sports medicine

to increase awareness of the medical pr

ofession, sports population, and general public to the profession of podiatric sports medicine and modalities available to those who participate in sports

to coordinate student chapters and to acquaint the podiatric medical student with the needs and demands placed upon athletes

These measures have proven successful over the years by reaching out to podiatrists, other practitioners, athletes, trainers, physical therapists, students and the public. It has been through all of these collective efforts that the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has been able to realize its goals and continue to set new ones.

From its very name, podiatry has always been rooted in the specialized care of the foot and ankle. It's a reminder of the long history behind a profession dedicated to keeping patients healthy, active, and moving!

The Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) Summer Games were held on June 26 at Santa Clara University, where AAPSM Fellows and Samuel Merritt University faculty and students proudly participated in the Healthy Athletes Fit Feet program.

Special thanks to AAPSM Fellows Dr. Tim Dutra (Clinical Director), Dr. Doug Robinson, and Dr. Ajitha Nair, along with AAPSM resident member Jannani Krishnan and Professor Marjorie Hammer from the Samuel Merritt University Nursing Program. They were joined by podiatry and nursing students who helped provide comprehensive Fit Feet screenings to more than 250 Special Olympics athletes.

Each Fit Feet screening included a foot examination, gait assessment, athletic shoe evaluation, and personalized recommendations for foot care, injury prevention, and referrals for follow-up care when needed.

The event was a tremendous success, with Fit Feet once again proving to be one of the busiest and most impactful stations within the Healthy Athletes program. The dedication of the volunteers helped ensure that athletes received valuable foot health assessments and education to support their overall health and athletic performance.

AAPSM members interested in volunteering with the Special Olympics Fit Feet Program are encouraged to contact AAPSM Executive Director Rita Yates at [email protected] for more information about future volunteer opportunities.
