Established in 1981, Peterson Smith is a state-of-the-art equine hospital offering extensive services ranging from our first response ambulatory team to our hospital specialists and Advanced Fertility Center.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Peterson Smith!

Our office will be closed on Monday, September 9th in observance of the holiday. Emergency hospital and ambulatory services will remain available, and regular business hours will resume Tuesday, September 10th.

Heading to the Opportunities in Equine Practice Seminar (OEPS) this weekend? Be sure to stop by and meet the Peterson Smith Equine Hospital team!

Associate Veterinarian Dr. Bailey Stolsworth and current Surgical Resident Dr. Kelsey Katchuik will be there to share why PSEH is such an exciting place to launch your career. As one of the largest equine practices in the country, PSEH offers an unmatched combination of clinical variety, advanced facilities, experienced mentorship, and a team invested in helping the next generation of equine veterinarians thrive.

The opportunities extend well beyond the daily caseload. Our interns participate in 18 in-house wet labs each year, covering everything from advanced procedures and surgical techniques to essential clinical skills. With a varied caseload and a team of veterinarians across multiple specialties, there’s always something new to see, learn, and tackle.

Our in-house wet lab series is officially underway for the year! This skill that may not always get the spotlight, but makes a big difference in patient care: bandaging. Participants had the opportunity to perfect their bandaging skills in a hands-on learning environment. Correct bandaging protects a wound, supports healing, prevents complications, and makes a very real difference in a horse’s recovery.

We’re excited to offer these hands-on learning opportunities throughout the year to our DVMs, visiting students, and staff. Our wet labs are all about building confidence, sharing knowledge, and making sure our team is always improving!

We take pride in recognizing team members whose compassion, kindness, and dedication make a difference every day. This month, our Star Award honors Rose Valera, one of our Advanced Fertility Center team members!

Rose recently demonstrated exceptional compassion and initiative while supporting a client who needed a little extra care and understanding. She took the time to listen, offered kindness and support, and went above and beyond to make sure the client knew they were not alone. Sometimes, the most meaningful impact we make happens in moments that never make it into a medical record. Rose’s willingness to pause and listen made one of those moments a little easier for someone.

Thank you, Rose, for leading with empathy and for showing us that exceptional care extends far beyond our patients. Your compassion and thoughtfulness are exactly what make the Peterson Smith team special!

As another summer comes to a close, we're saying goodbye to our incredible undergraduate working students. While we're sad to see them go, we're even more grateful for the hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm they brought to Peterson Smith Equine Hospital + Complete Care throughout the season. Thank you for everything you've done to support our team and our patients, we've loved having each of you with us and can't wait to see where your journeys take you next.

We'd also like to give a very special shoutout to Ambulatory working student Sara Peters, who received the exciting news that she has been accepted to North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and will begin veterinary school in the fall of 2027! Sara also completed an AFC undergraduate internship season in 2025. Congratulations, Sara! We are honored to have been a small part of your journey and can't wait to see the impact you'll make on the future of equine medicine.

Happy Fourth of July! Wishing you a joyful and safe holiday as we celebrate America’s birthday, honoring the land of the free and the home of the brave! May your day be filled with time spent with family, friends, and horses, and may your evening at the barn be calm, quiet, and low-stress.

As we celebrate this Independence Day, we also look ahead with pride to America’s 250th birthday in 2026: a historic milestone honoring two and a half centuries of courage, sacrifice, freedom, and the enduring spirit that unites us all.

We hope everyone is getting excited for the upcoming holiday weekend, and looking forward to time with family, friends, and horses!

To allow our team to celebrate with their loved ones, Peterson Smith’s administrative offices will be closed July 3rd, 4th, and 5th. We will remain open for emergency hospital and ambulatory services only during this time. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, July 6th.

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Carol Clark on being named an Outstanding Alumna!
