This week is CPR & AED Awareness Week, which makes it a good time to ask:

Would you know the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest?

They are not the same.

A heart attack usually happens when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked. Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops beating effectively.

Both are serious, but cardiac arrest requires immediate action:

• Call 911
• Start CPR
• Use an AED if one is available

Save this post and share it with your family. A few seconds of knowledge can matter when every second counts.

If you think someone may be having a medical emergency, call 911 right away.

While many adults born with heart defects may believe they're "fixed" after childhood, their risk can grow with age.

It’s Fish Fry Friday on the Gulf Coast!

Across the Mississippi Gulf Coast, many families observe Lenten Fridays by gathering for a good fish fry. It’s a tradition that brings people together around the table.

While fried fish is a beloved part of our culture, there are also ways to enjoy seafood that are especially heart-healthy.

Fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, which support cardiovascular health and may help lower inflammation and support healthy cholesterol levels.

If you're enjoying fish today, consider mixing in some grilled, baked, or broiled seafood as well. Your heart will thank you.

At Southern Mississippi Heart Center, we’re grateful to care for the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and help our community live healthier lives every day.

Have a heart-healthy Friday!

Today we are celebrating 50 WATCHMAN™ implants in one year!

At Southern Mississippi Heart Center, this milestone represents lives impacted through thoughtful, advanced stroke prevention care. It reflects patients whose risk of stroke has been reduced and who now have an important alternative to long-term blood thinners.

This achievement is the result of the skill and collaboration of our physicians, nurses, and cath lab teams, along with the trust our patients place in us every day.

We are proud of this team and grateful to provide advanced, compassionate cardiac care to our community.
