I do understand that sometimes people cannot see themselves at a weight I set, but I see it, and I have been doing this successfully for a very long time. My job is not to get you to a weight that you want to be if that weight is still overweight; itโ€™s not to get you to the โ€œslimmest Iโ€™ve ever beenโ€ if that is still overweight. My job is to get you to the weight I know you must be โ€” so I can put you through stabilization and maintenance programs to give you the best chance of never being overweight again. If you have 50 pounds to lose but only want to lose 30, this is not the program for you.

The process of changing oneโ€™s eating and lifestyle habits must include the process of owning up to why you are where you are, taking responsibility for your actions, and taking the โ€œvictimโ€ and โ€œblameโ€ cards out of your deck. Both those cards donโ€™t โ€œplayโ€ well with me. And if you canโ€™t handle hearing โ€œCut the crapโ€ when itโ€™s relevant, youโ€™re not the right client for me.

My experience is that those who think they โ€œknow it allโ€ when it comes to weight loss simply because theyโ€™ve been dieting forever are also those who are unwilling to be open-minded about a new way of doing things. Theyโ€™re full of โ€œI canโ€™tsโ€ and โ€œI wonโ€™tsโ€ in terms of what they canโ€™t do and/or wonโ€™t eat or drink (excluding allergies and medical issues, of course), or wonโ€™t give up. Theyโ€™ll throw the money at me and think that because they โ€œjoinedโ€ the program, thatโ€™s the same as โ€œdoingโ€ the program. If this is you, save your money. This is the wrong program for you.

A resignation mind set usually starts because weight loss efforts have simply not happened fast enough for your liking. So, you stop . . . repeatedly.

๐Ÿšจ If you donโ€™t want to have to keep restarting, donโ€™t stop.

Slow and steady is better and safer than fast weight loss. When you lose weight slowly, even though it seems to take forever, you end up keeping the weight off long term.

You ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜ accept, from the start, that it's going to take time. If you do this, it will be easy to avoid giving up and resigning yourself to being fat.

When you plan a diet thatโ€™s very strict, youโ€™re setting yourself up for failure. No one wants to be hungry.

โœ”๏ธ Deciding you must eliminate all the foods you like from your diet.

This always backfires.

Eat most of your meals and snacks based on healthy choices (lean meats, fruits, veggies, whole grains) and ๐‘œ๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง to indulge in your favorite meal or snack. The key word is "plan." Never do it on a whim. That ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘  makes you feel worse.

First, a shout-out to Jon Paul Bakhos at Meant to Move Personal Training. Weโ€™re in year 3 of his putting up with me 3-4 times per week, listening to me bitch and moan (and cursing him silently . . . alright, not silently!) as he โ€œtorturesโ€ me each session. My training program has evolved regularly, he challenges me consistently; I have become stronger, more fluid, flexible, and defined; and have never had so much as an ache or pain or injured myself in any way because I am under his watchful eye for proper form and performance every minute of my workouts. I am very grateful to him for that.

I want to reiterate to everyone, but especially to clients to whom I preach every day: You really are what you eat. And yes . . . it takes a helluva lot of daily effort and weekly work.

The fact that I reached this age slim, healthy, fit, muscular and strong, with no medical issues, and actively engaged in a successful business with clients across the U.S. and international, has ZERO to do with my genes, or luck (thereโ€™s no such thing), or some divine dispensation from the Almighty.
