Love this story.
For our second National Breastfeeding Month story, we talked to a mother who asked to remain anonymous. Their story is one of connection.
“When I was pregnant with my son, I spent a lot of time researching breastfeeding. I remember learning that mothers with a college education were more likely to breastfeed.
“At the time, I had not gone to college yet, but earning a degree was something I hoped to do in the future. That information stuck with me. It made me think about the life I wanted to build for myself and my son, and breastfeeding became one of the choices I felt was right for us.
“Breastfeeding was not always easy, but it became a really meaningful part of my experience as a mother. I set a personal goal of breastfeeding until my son was 2, based on the World Health Organization’s recommendations. I loved the convenience of being able to feed him wherever we were, and I valued the health benefits breastfeeding could provide.
“I originally planned to stop when he was around 2, but I was also going through a divorce at that time. With so many changes happening in our lives, breastfeeding continued to be a source of comfort and connection for my son. We continued until he was 3. That was simply what worked for us during that time in our lives.
“Years later, I went to college, earned my nursing degree, and became a registered nurse. Today, much of my work focuses on mothers, babies, and families. My own experience has helped me understand just how personal every feeding journey is. Breastfeeding looks different for every family, and for some families it may not be part of their journey at all. As a nurse, I want parents to have good information, support, resources, and respect for whatever feeding choices work best for them and their babies.
"My son is now a teenager, and we still have a very close relationship. I am grateful for the years I was able to breastfeed him and for what that experience meant to us. It became an important part of my story as a mother, and it continues to shape the way I support other mothers and babies today.”
