CUPPING THERAPY - HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

You’ve probably seen the circular marks cupping can leave behind - but what is actually happening underneath the cups, and why can cupping be such a powerful addition to your massage or stretching session?

Unlike massage, where we primarily use compression and pressure into the tissues, cupping works in the opposite direction.

The cups create gentle negative pressure (suction), lifting the skin and superficial tissues upward. This can help create space between layers of tissue, encourage local circulation, reduce muscular tension and improve tissue mobility - especially in areas that feel chronically tight, restricted or “stuck.”

Because of that lifting effect, cupping can be a wonderful tool for areas where simply applying more and more pressure isn’t necessarily the answer.

🌿 Potential benefits of cupping include:
• Helping reduce muscle tension and soreness
• Increasing local blood flow
• Improving mobility between layers of soft tissue
• Supporting myofascial work
• Helping improve range of motion
• Providing another approach to stubborn areas of tension
• Complementing massage and assisted stretching beautifully

At Serenity Roots Wellness, cupping can be incorporated into your session in several different ways:

✨ ADD IT TO YOUR MASSAGE
Enjoy your regular full-body massage, while cupping is incorporated into the areas that need deeper, more focused attention. Instead of using deep-tissue pressure everywhere, we can use cups strategically over particularly tight or problematic areas.

✨ ADD IT TO AN ASSISTED STRETCHING SESSION
During a 60-minute full-body stretching session, cups can be applied to the tightest or most restricted areas — especially where you’re experiencing discomfort, stiffness or limited range of motion. Combining decompression with movement and stretching can be particularly helpful when working with mobility restrictions.

✨ BOOK A FOCUSED CUPPING SESSION
Cupping can also be used as a treatment on its own. Rather than receiving a full-body massage, the entire session is focused on specific problem areas using different cupping techniques and targeted soft-tissue work.

And yes - those famous circular marks can sometimes occur! They are not bruises in the traditional sense, although they can look similar. The amount of discoloration varies significantly from person to person and even from one area of the body to another.

Cupping uses suction to help move areas of “stagnation,” increase circulation within congested tissues, and support the body’s natural clearance of metabolic byproducts. These maelstromd usually clear within 4-7 days.

Cupping isn’t about putting cups everywhere and hoping for the best. 😉 It’s another therapeutic tool that can be used intentionally based on what your body needs that day.

🌿 Massage. Movement. Decompression.
Sometimes changing the way we approach the tissue can make all the difference.

What we don’t process emotionally can sometimes show up physically. Chronic stress, unresolved emotions, and difficult experiences can influence our nervous system, breathing, posture, muscle tension, and pain - sometimes long after the stressful experience itself has passed.

This is where therapies such as Craniosacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release, and Myofascial Release can become powerful tools. Chronic stress and difficult experiences can influence the nervous system, breathing patterns, posture, muscle guarding, and the way we hold tension in our bodies. Through gentle, intentional touch and fascial work, these therapies can create space for the body to soften, regulate, and release long-held patterns of tension - sometimes accompanied by an emotional response or a deeper sense of awareness.
Healing isn’t always about forcing the body to let go; sometimes it’s about creating enough safety for it to finally soften.

🚶‍♀️ WALKING IS MEDICINE - AND YOU MAY NEED LESS THAN YOU THINK. 🦶🫵

We often think improving our health requires an intense workout, a gym membership or 10,000 steps every single day.

But research tells a much more encouraging story:

Simply WALKING MORE can create measurable changes in your physical AND mental health.

🧠 MENTAL HEALTH
A large meta-analysis involving more than 96,000 adults found:

✨ 5,000+ steps/day was associated with fewer depressive symptoms compared with fewer than 5,000.

✨ 7,000+ steps/day was associated with a 31% lower risk of developing depression.

✨ Every additional 1,000 steps/day was associated with about a 9% lower risk of depression.

❤️ HEART + LONGEVITY
Another large analysis involving nearly 227,000 people found:

✨ Every additional 1,000 steps/day was associated with a 15% lower risk of death from any cause.

✨ Every additional 500 steps/day was associated with a 7% lower risk of cardiovascular death.

And benefits appeared at surprisingly low step counts - you don’t necessarily need 10,000 steps to make a difference.

🩸 BLOOD PRESSURE
Research on walking programs has found average reductions of approximately:

✨ 4 mmHg in systolic blood pressure
✨ 2 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure
✨ And a reduction in resting heart rate.

🧠 BRAIN HEALTH
In a study of more than 78,000 adults:

✨ Around 3,800 steps/day was associated with a 25% lower risk of developing dementia.

✨ The greatest estimated benefit occurred around 9,800 steps/day.

😴 SLEEP
Research also shows that regular walking can significantly improve subjective sleep quality.

💪 AND THERE’S MORE.
Regular physical activity such as walking supports:

• Cardiovascular fitness
• Blood sugar regulation and metabolic health
• Healthy weight management
• Bone and muscle health
• Brain function and cognition
• Stress regulation
• Mood and emotional well-being
• Better sleep
• Mobility and balance
• Healthy aging

🌿 The message isn’t that you HAVE to walk 10,000 steps.

The message is:

MOVE MORE THAN YOU DID YESTERDAY.

If you’re averaging 3,000 steps, aim for 4,000.

If you’re at 5,000, try 6,000.

Take the stairs.
Park farther away.
Walk your dog.
Take a 10-minute walk after lunch.
Walk while you’re on the phone.
Go outside after dinner.

Those little walks ADD UP.

Your body doesn’t need perfection.

It needs movement. ❤️

Massage can help us recover, relax and reconnect with our bodies - but some of the most powerful things we can do for our health happen in the hours between our sessions.

So today, put on your shoes, step outside and WALK. 🚶‍♀️

Your heart, brain, muscles - and mind - will thank you.

YOUR BODY WHISPERS BEFORE IT SCREAMS.

That little pull in your neck.
The shoulder you’re constantly rolling.
The low back that feels stiff every morning.
The hips that never quite loosen up.
The tension headache that keeps showing up after a long day.

We get very good at adapting to discomfort - and sometimes so good that we stop noticing how much tension we’re actually carrying.

Your body doesn’t need to be in severe pain before it deserves attention.

Massage and therapeutic bodywork can help reduce muscular tension, improve mobility, support circulation and give your nervous system an opportunity to shift out of constant “go mode” and into a state where the body can actually rest and recover.

Sometimes the best time to take care of your body is before it has to yell for your attention.

Listen to the whispers.

🛁 What actually happens during a “detox” bath?

It’s not just about what you put in the water - heat itself creates a physiological response.

As your body warms, blood vessels near the skin dilate, peripheral circulation increases and your body activates its natural cooling mechanisms - including sweating.

A warm mineral bath can help create an environment that supports:

✨ Increased peripheral blood flow
✨ Vasodilation
✨ Sweating & thermoregulation
✨ Muscle relaxation
✨ Nervous-system downshifting
✨ The body’s normal metabolic and elimination processes

Your liver and kidneys still do the heavy lifting when it comes to detoxification. Think of a “detox bath” as creating supportive conditions for the processes your body already performs naturally.

🧠 The nervous-system connection

When your body shifts out of fight-or-flight and toward the parasympathetic rest, digest & restore state, something important changes: your system no longer has to devote the same resources to remaining on high alert.

Heart rate, muscle tension and stress activation can begin to settle while the body moves toward homeostasis - its internal state of regulation and balance.

And this is where restorative practices become so valuable.

The more consistently we give the entire system opportunities to spend time in a regulated, restorative state, the more opportunity the body has to devote its resources to normal processes of digestion, tissue repair, immune regulation, recovery and healing.

True healing is rarely about forcing the body to do something.

It’s about creating the conditions in which the body can do what it was designed to - and giving it enough time there.

A warm bath, slow breathing, dim lighting, quiet and freedom from stimulation can all send signals of safety to the nervous system and help that shift occur.

🌡️ How hot?

For most healthy adults, aim for comfortably warm-to-hot water around 100–104°F (38–40°C) and avoid pushing beyond 104°F. You don’t need extreme heat to create a thermoregulatory response.

Try 15–30 minutes, listen to your body and stay well hydrated before and after. If you become dizzy, weak, nauseated, excessively flushed or uncomfortable, get out and cool down.

⚠️ A note about heat & cardiovascular health:

Hot baths and saunas cause vasodilation and can affect cardiovascular workload and blood pressure. If you have cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, problems with fainting or blood-pressure regulation, are pregnant or take medications that affect blood pressure or heat tolerance, speak with your healthcare provider before intentionally raising your body temperature with hot baths or saunas.

Add mineral salts, dim the lights, put the phone away and let your nervous system settle.

Sometimes “detox” isn’t about doing more.

It’s about creating the conditions that allow your body to do its job.
