Created in 1975 by Harvard dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, the Fitzpatrick Scale classifies skin into six types based on how it responds to UV exposure — including how easily it burns, tans, and develops pigmentation.

Why does this matter? Because skin type directly affects how the skin reacts to sunlight, lasers, chemical peels, microneedling, and other treatments. In dermatology, knowing a patient’s Fitzpatrick type helps providers choose safer, more effective treatment settings while reducing the risk of complications like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), hypopigmentation, burns, and scarring.

The Fitzpatrick Scale also plays a major role in skin cancer prevention and education, reminding us that while all skin tones can experience sun damage and skin cancer, they may present differently across skin types.
