Dodge proudly proclaims that they have replaced "God" with "loud", and I don't think that they are the only ones who have done so. This commercial will appeal to those who are of this world while inspiring feelings of aversion in those who are not. Let us continue to pray for our spiritually poor country.

We were born loud. Got something to say? Say it. Something to prove...

“Let everything be secondary with us to the provident care we should take of our children, and to our bringing them up in the chastening and admonition of the Lord” (St. John Chrysostom).

St. John Chrysostom’s concern here is that parents might emphasize worldly interests and success for their children instead of what is of the Holy Spirit and not of this world.

Modern American parents, especially here in Southern California, too often stress the things that are of this world. For example, some insist that a child stick with a particular sport even when the child does not enjoy it, without asking, “What does God really care about sports other than that they were given to us as sources of fun?”

In other cases, when a child appears to love a sport and shows special talent in it, parents, keen on worldly success, too often hire private coaches and enroll their children in elite leagues. Practices delay family meals. Games are sometimes held on Sundays, obscuring the real meaning of the day. The child is taught to be self-centered and to expect everyone’s life to revolve around his or her interests.

Parents’ approach to sports is only one area in which they too often teach that the pursuit of worldly ambitions is more important than godly pursuits. The same thing happens with art, music, and academic interests. In too many cases, parents hire the best tutors, enter their children into academic competitions, and stress the importance of obtaining a particular degree or attending a university of a certain caliber.

Such children are often my future clients. Chasing what the world offers did not teach them how to simply be, how to relate to people, or how to love them as God wills us to love one another. Their priority is not God, and, unsurprisingly, they find themselves with relational problems that make them deeply unhappy.

St. John Chrysostom is not opposed to children learning how to live in the world. Rather, his position is that they must also be taught how to be not of this world while living in it.

May more parents take provident care of their children, because doing so is not only what is best for a child but could also transform the world.

"For if you train yourself not to be vainglorious in company of your wife and your servants, you will not ever afterwards be easily caught by this passion with regard to any one else. For though this malady be in every case grievous and tyrannical, yet is it so especially when a woman is present" (St. John Chrysostom).

We who are married have found our one vocation, and if we put all our effort into mastering it, we will be able to reproduce what we have learned in the home with others outside the home.

When we succeed in being humble in the home, we can eventually succeed in being humble outside the home as well.

This can be especially difficult for men, given that they are often socialized to compete, to dominate others proudly, and to boast about it. Yet the transformation of the Church and society in this area depends on men recognizing their vainglory as a problem and holding themselves accountable for it.

If prayer and self-improvement efforts to reduce one's vainglory are not working, one may wish to seek help from a good Catholic therapist. Wives of prideful husbands may also benefit from seeking such outside help to receive much-needed support.

One key feature of narcissism is delusions of grandeur, which is essentially extreme vainglory. I specialize in working with narcissists who want to change, with couples in which one spouse is a narcissist, and with victims of narcissistic abuse. With the right assistance, there is hope for narcissists who want to change, as well as support for wives married to prideful husbands who refuse to admit any wrongdoing.

Vainglorious husbands who humble themselves enough to seek expert help can make their homes happier and can grow to be a light to all those whom they encounter in the Church and the world—not only without bragging about it, but precisely because they refuse to brag about it.

“Do you see the mystery of marriage? He made of one, one; and again, having made these two, one, He so makes one, so that now also man is produced of one. […] See again a mystery of love!” (St. John Chrysostom).

The image of God is reflected in marriage. This is easy to lose sight of, especially when one’s spouse is insufferable or one’s children are unruly.

Yet the image of God is there. It may simply need to be rediscovered before it can be seen.

Sometimes, prayerful reflection and seeking God’s assistance are all it takes to realize the mystery of love.

At other times, the problems in a marriage or family are so severe that a spouse, couple, or family needs outside assistance from a licensed Catholic therapist.

May God make haste to come to the assistance of all couples and families who have lost the ability to see the image of God in one another and, collectively, in themselves as a unit.

“You were more inward than my most inward part and higher than the highest element within me” (St. Augustine).

Although God can be found in creation through the senses, St. Augustine found God by looking inward and realizing that His closeness is greater than our deepest level of self-awareness.

Also, by looking within ourselves, we realize that God transcends anything we might discover about ourselves.

St. Augustine teaches us both where God is and who He is. In terms of His presence, God is incredibly close; in terms of who He is, He is infinitely beyond us.

When we are in a state of grace, God is always with us in a special way. When we are in pain and in need of deep personal and relational healing, we need only look within—deep within—to discover the Divine Physician of our bodies and souls. God is love, and love heals all.

“Pray as though everything depended on God; work as though everything depended on you” (attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola).

The fruits of our labor are gifts from God because everything good comes from Him.

This also holds true for the fruits of the work we do in therapy as clients. With the help of a therapist, clients do the work of seeking introspection and understanding, facing sources of grief, and challenging distorted thoughts.

Healing comes about as a result of such work, and it is proper to thank God for that healing, even though we may have done the work of therapy as if everything depended on us.
