“Two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God; the heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self” (St. Augustine).

When two members of the heavenly city marry one another, the marriage can be heavenly.

When one spouse belongs to the heavenly city and the other to the earthly city, their marriage can become a living hell on earth for the citizen of the heavenly city.

If you find yourself married to someone who loves themselves even to the contempt of God, you are likely to be taken advantage of and betrayed by your spouse. We typically refer to such a spouse as a narcissist and their emotional and psychological abuse of you as narcissistic abuse.

It can be difficult for those who love God even to the contempt of self to make sure that they do not give too much of themselves to their narcissistic spouse. Sometimes they need the support of a friend or a good therapist to strengthen them so that they can say “No” more often.

Marital therapy can be helpful in these cases, but the therapist must be savvy because the narcissistic spouse is a master manipulator and likely to sabotage therapy if he does not get his own way. When such a spouse accepts that he is narcissistic, there is more hope than for one who is in denial, with the latter being the more common occurrence.

However, through prayer and persevering cooperation with God’s grace, individual therapy for the abused spouse or marital therapy for the couple can help make an intolerable marriage more tolerable and can sometimes even help transform the marriage into a thriving one.

May the Lord send His love and comfort to all heavenly citizens who find themselves married to earthly citizens and help them find the best way to get the support they need to set the healthy boundaries necessary to put a stop to the narcissistic abuse.
