Did you know.... Why Your Minerals Keep Tanking (And What Blood Sugar Has to Do with It)

If you've been following my nutrition work, you know I care and educate about a couple of big things. Two of which are: minerals and blood sugar.

For a long time I talked about them separately. Minerals here, blood sugar there. But they should be in the same conversation. Because the body is all connected (doesn't work in 'departments'). So I want to walk you through why.... because this connection is at the center of almost everything I hope to accomplish with clients.

Every time your blood sugar drops, your body sends in cortisol.

This is completely normal. It's your body doing its job. Cortisol tells your liver to release stored glucose (where its stored), brings your blood sugar back up, and gets you through the crash.

The problem isn't that particular mechanism. The problem is when it happens over and over, all day and through the night.

At 7am because breakfast was just coffee.

At 2pm because you didn't eat enough protein at lunch.

That 2-3am (awake at night again) because your body ran out of fuel while you were sleeping. Stores are depleted.

Every single one of those cortisol spikes has a cost. And a big part of that cost is your minerals. Why? Because minerals are largely stored in your adrenal glands (which is where cortisol pumps out). Those small little glands in your low back, right above your kidneys.

Here's the education piece:

Cortisol is a stress hormone. When it rises, your body shifts into a stress state. And in a stress state, minerals get mobilized from tissues and excreted. Magnesium is used heavily in the stress response and lost through urine. Sodium follows. So does potassium, zinc, and others.

These are the same minerals that support your thyroid function, your progesterone production, your sleep, and your energy.

This is why I see women with depleted mineral patterns on their HTMA (if they're testing their tissue). These people are eating well and supplementing consistently and still cannot fill their stores back up. If the blood sugar piece isn't addressed, the cortisol loop keeps running, and the minerals keep draining.

When blood sugar is stable, cortisol has less reason to spike. When cortisol is calmer, minerals are preserved. Over time, that changes your entire hormonal foundation.

What can you do? Take minerals!!! Easy fix if you do it consistently. Give these a whirl. I drink them daily :) Non-negotiable.

It's not magic. It's physiology.

There are three main levers for stable blood sugar:

Nutrition. How you build your meals matters more than what you cut out. Protein, fat, and fiber at every meal slow glucose absorption, reduce reactive spikes, and keep cortisol from being pulled into blood sugar management all day long. This isn't about restricting carbs. It's about pairing them thoughtfully.

Lifestyle. Your sleep quality, your morning light exposure, your meal timing, your chronic stress load: all of it affects how your body handles glucose. Circadian rhythm and blood sugar regulation are deeply intertwined, and the lifestyle piece is often the one that gets overlooked.

Movement. Specifically, strength training. Muscle tissue is one of the most powerful tools you have for improving insulin sensitivity. More muscle means your cells can take up glucose more efficiently, without needing as much insulin to do it. And strength training that's built with your nervous system in mind, not designed to exhaust you, actually lowers your stress burden instead of adding to it.

These three things work together. They're the foundation of almost everything I help women with.

The ultimate in electrolytes and micronutrients. BEAM Minerals products deliver completely natural, mineral fulvic and humic complexes in a liquid format that can be ingested or applied topically. 100% PLANT-SOURCED. 100% BIOAVAILABLE. 100% PURE.

I've been bumping into a few pregnant women, all asking me the same question lately.... What's the best vitamin? And can't I just eat gummies? GREAT question!!! So here it goes....

Prenatal gummies have historically come with a tradeoff: they are easier to take, but harder to formulate with meaningful amounts of certain nutrients.

A gummy has a ceiling on how much nutrition it can hold without compromising texture or stability.

That does not mean capsules are automatically the better (or only) choice. During pregnancy, nausea, gag reflex and capsule fatigue can make consistency just as important as what is on the label.

In my opinion, the best prenatal is the one a woman actually takes and tolerates. A gummy can be a strong prenatal option if it delivers meaningful nutrition in a form someone can consistently tolerate.

Ever heard of the brand Needed? Let me stack it against some other popular options like OLLY, Nature Made and Smarty Pants. All brand you'd typically find in your local stores.

At first look, these 4 prenatal gummies check many of the same boxes. The bigger differences appear when you zoom in on how much of each nutrient you are actually getting. The dosing.

Needed’s Prenatal Gummy delivers around 8x more nutrition than Olly, 5x more than SmartyPants, and 6x more than Nature Made.

Needed takes a different approach. Given the physical limits of the gummy format, it prioritizes higher amounts of several key nutrients within the prenatal gummy itself, including vitamin D, B6 and B12, and offers DHA and EPA in a separate dedicated formula.

The differences are substantial. Needed provides 40 mg of B6 compared with 2 mg in each of the other three, 4,000 IU of vitamin D compared with 800 to 1,200 IU, and considerably more B12.

The differences are meaningful because those nutrients play in areas like energy, fetal brain development, and bone health.

Hope that helps!

Did you know…..
Thyroids are nuanced? Every person has specific and varied needs based on current labs and lifestyle.

If you have been told your thyroid is fine, but you still feel like you are running on a low battery, listen up.

Most people know that the thyroid produces a hormone called T4.
What fewer people know is that T4 is essentially INactive.

It is a storage hormone.

For it to actually work in your body, it needs to be converted into the active form, T3 (free), and that conversion is where so many people struggle.

Your T4 labs may look fine and that’s likely what your physician has, sadly, only ordered.

You need the full picture. A full thyroid panel. You don’t even need to go to the physician in order to request labs. Order for yourself right here for a fraction of the cost: https://ultalabtests.com/partners/crazygoodco
(Type Crazy Good Thyroid in the search box and Viola, all set!). You’ll schedule your own appointment online, go to your blood draw, get full results back in a few days via email & download the pdf to share with your practitioner.

Lots of nutrients are required to feed the conversion. Things like selenium and iodine. Plus, your liver needs to be able to process T4 into T3 hormones effectively. Your liver works really hard to filter and process all day long.

Your body needs Free T3 flowing to feel energetic. To have warm hands and feet. To have proper digestion. To grow hair, skin and nails. Your thyroid is the master regulator for all things metabolism.

There is a step that is rarely discussed in the Thyroid Pathway conversion - that I think you might be interested to learn about……. And one of the most important players in that conversion process is a hormone that is barely mentioned in the same breath as thyroid health: Progesterone.

What Progesterone Does for Your Thyroid
Progesterone supports the conversion of inactive T4 into active T3 in a bunch of ways:

🦋 It directly stimulates the enzyme (5-deiodinase) responsible for removing an iodine molecule from T4 to create T3.
🦋 It opposes estrogen, which, when in excess, actively suppresses thyroid conversion.
🦋 It supports thyroid receptor sensitivity, meaning your cells can actually respond to the thyroid hormone that does arrive.
🦋 It has a warming, calming effect on metabolism that works in concert with thyroid hormone.

When progesterone is low, conversion suffers. Less active T3 reaches your cells and you feel it: fatigue, weight gain, low mood, poor sleep, hair thinning, cold hands and feet, and that frustrating flatness that no amount of rest seems to fix.

When Does Progesterone Drop?
Progesterone begins declining around age 35 and drops significantly through peri-menopause.
By the time many women reach menopause, it is barely detectable. This is one of the key reasons thyroid symptoms so often emerge or worsen in midlife, even in women who have never had a thyroid concern in the past.

Other factors that deplete progesterone:
🦋 Chronic stress (cortisol production competes directly with progesterone in what is known as the pregnenolone steal)
🦋 Estrogen dominance
🦋 Nutritional deficiencies, particularly zinc, vitamin B6, and vitamin C
🦋 Oral contraceptive use

Nutrients That Support Progesterone Production:

🦋 Vitamin B6
Essential for progesterone synthesis and for reducing the estrogen dominance that suppresses it.

Food sources: chicken, turkey, wild salmon, potatoes, bananas, and sunflower seeds.

Daily target: 1-1.7mg per day from food, higher therapeutic doses via supplementation under practitioner guidance.

🦋 Zinc
Supports the pituitary signal (luteinizing hormone, LH) that triggers progesterone production, after ovulation.

Food sources: oysters, red meat, pumpkin seeds, and eggs.

Daily target: 8-12mg per day.

🦋 Vitamin C
Concentrates in the corpus luteum (the structure that produces progesterone after ovulation) and directly supports progesterone output.

Food sources: kiwi fruit, citrus, strawberries, and broccoli.

Daily target: at least 500mg per day, higher under stress.

🦋 Magnesium
Supports the adrenal function needed for healthy hormone production and reduces the cortisol that competes with progesterone.

Food sources: dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, and almonds.

Daily target: 300-420mg per day.

What About Progesterone Replacement?
For many women in perimenopause and menopause, optimizing nutrition is an important foundation but may not be enough. BioIdentical progesterone (as opposed to synthetic progestins) is being more recognized for its thyroid-supportive effects (plus its hormonal benefits). I often call progesterone on the Cinderella of hormones because she makes you calm, cool and collected. If you find yourself overly emotional or more easily angered than you used to be, odds are good that you could use some progesterone support.

This is a conversation worth having with a practitioner who understands both thyroid and hormone health together, rather than in isolation. And guess what? NOT every practitioner understands these nuances. It takes lots of additional training and time to learn about how the body is connected.

The Big Picture….
Thyroid health and hormonal health are not separate conversations. They are deeply intertwined. Progesterone does not just balance estrogen. It actively supports the conversion step that determines how much functional thyroid hormone your body produces each day.

If your T4 is adequate but your T3 is low or your symptoms persist despite treatment, low progesterone is one of the first places to investigate.

Memorial Day has a different feel in small towns.

You see the flags along the road, the veterans gathered at the cemetery, families stopping by gravesites, and neighbors taking a little extra time to remember why the day matters. It is simple, but it says a lot about who we are.

Today, we honor the men and women who gave their lives serving this great nation. They came from places like ours. They had families, jobs, farms, churches, classmates, teammates, and neighbors who knew them by name.

Because of them, we get to build our lives here at home. We get to raise our families, work the land, run our businesses, worship freely, and enjoy the communities they helped defend.

Any country worth that sacrifice is one we must take care of.
