Creating the next chapter
“I wanted to be innovative,” said longtime Greenland Elementary School instructor Chris Lutz. “I was willing to try something different with the residents, and create a different kind of connection.”

And that she did. Twice monthly Lutz conducts a reading activity with residents, reciting children’s books and drawing them into the world of vivid illustrations and colorful stories. The platform provides an animated exchange, memories evoked and spontaneous input. “I love sharing literature with adults. Some ask why children’s books? So many children’s books are appropriate for adults. They depict a world of imagination and discovery.”

She taps her resources “from every library all over the county,”, bringing a variety of topics and discussion points. “I believe it’s meaningful for all of us. These residents have become some of my finest friends.”

Meet Our Multimedia Intern!

Please join us in welcoming Zach a senior at Carroll University to Shorehaven for the summer.

One of his first assignments was simple: grab a camera, head outside, and capture signs of the season around campus.

From blooming flowers to feathered visitors, these photos are a glimpse of Shorehaven through his lens as he begins his journey with our team.

We're excited to have him on board and look forward to sharing more of his work in the weeks ahead!

Berry Pickers Unite! This is your month to shine! Tips from Rockwell's chef Mike Stigler
Here is a seasonal recipe that utilizes fresh strawberries, one of the favorite seasonal treats that are especially tasty in the month of June. Many of the “you pick” strawberry farms will be opening this month, and they will be increasingly available in farmers markets and grocery stores. Even though modern agriculture has enabled us to purchase fruits of all types pretty much year-round, the strawberries are never as ripe and delicious as they will be this month.

Malted Strawberry Ice Cream (no churn)

½ cup fresh ripe strawberries, hulled and chopped
2 TB raw honey
1 TB fresh grated ginger
2 cups heavy whipping cream (cold)
1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk
Pinch of Kosher salt
1 tsp malted milk powder

- Toss strawberries with honey and ginger, set aside in the fridge.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, using the whip attachment, whisk the heavy cream, condensed milk, salt and malted milk powder, beat on high until stiff peaks are formed.
- Remove strawberries from fridge and mash well with a fork and gently fold them into the ice cream mixture. Pour mixture into a metal pan and freeze for 4 hours or overnight.

• If you don’t have malted milk powder, you can omit it from the recipe. If you want to enhance the color, use a drop or two of red food coloring. You could also add other inclusions, such as chocolate shavings, candied pecans, or sugar cookie crumbles for a different texture.

The Edwin L. Jones American Legion Post 91 led the Memorial Day Parade Monday, and Dr. John Koehn, age 91, rode in the Shorehaven trishaw right behind the flag bearers. “These were my people, this was my group, there was nothing else to do but march with them,” said Koehn, a Lake Terrace resident. The Vietnam Era infantry officer called himself a “ground pounder” while serving as courier officer between 1958 and 1961.

With his son Mike piloting the trishaw Memorial Day, John asked him to lower the footrest, and John dismounted to join his fleet. “It was killing him to sit in that trishaw,” said Mike. John walked not a few feet, not a few yards, but marched with Legionnaires from the City Beach ceremony location to the parade’s conclusion at Fowler Park. “I didn’t walk, I marched,” said Koehn. “I told Mike ‘Here are my buddies, and I have to march with them.’”

Trishaw pilot Mike had arranged the parade ride a few days before. His father was honored to participate. “This was truly a significant event to remember those who served and gave their lives for this country,” said John. “It is our duty to honor them for protecting our freedoms.” From the trishaw, the Koehn duo saluted fellow veterans, waved to bystanders and commemorated the occasion. “It was so heartfelt being with our veterans,” said John. “I am so proud to belong to this American Legion.” Mike noted, “I was grateful and honored to share this patriotic moment with my dad.”
