✨world breastfeeding week ✨

Okay, I get to brag a little on this one. I was nursing my 18mo when these two were born… for a while I was bf THREE. It was exhausting, chaotic, and honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I’m really proud of myself for making it through that season and yes I do want the cookie 😂

Newborn Weight Loss: What Every Parent Should Know 🤍

It’s normal for babies to lose weight after birth—but the number on the scale doesn’t tell the whole story.

Here are 7 things to know:

✨ 1. Birth weight can be misleading.
IV fluids during labor can temporarily increase your baby’s birth weight, making normal fluid loss look like excessive weight loss.

✨ 2. Weight loss is expected.
Most healthy newborns lose 5–7% of their birth weight, and up to 10% may be normal depending on the whole clinical picture. Weight loss alone doesn’t automatically mean your baby needs formula.

✨ 3. Get a weighted feed before supplementing.
Once your milk comes in, an IBCLC can assess how much milk your baby is transferring and help determine whether supplementation is truly needed.

✨ 4. Formula is a medical intervention.
Sometimes it’s absolutely necessary—and lifesaving. But when it’s not medically indicated, unnecessary supplementation can make breastfeeding more challenging.

✨ 5. Colostrum is enough.
Your first milk is packed with antibodies and nutrients that protect your baby’s gut, build their microbiome, and support their immune system.

✨ 6. Breastfed babies eat more often.
Breast milk is digested quickly, so frequent feeding is normal and helps establish a healthy milk supply.

✨ 7. Your baby isn’t “lazy” at the breast.
Breast milk naturally contains hormones, including cholecystokinin (CCK), that help babies feel full and relaxed. Sleepiness at the breast is normal unless your baby isn’t gaining weight well or isn’t having enough wet and dirty diapers.

💛 Every baby deserves an individualized feeding assessment—not just a number on a scale. If you’re concerned, connect with your baby’s healthcare provider and an IBCLC before assuming supplementation is the only answer.

I saw a comment that said “this information makes women who CAN’T breastfeed feel useless and scared”

If you couldn’t breastfeed, wouldn’t you want to know the risks of not breastfeeding? Wouldn’t you prefer to be informed and educated so you can do something about it? For example :

If breastfeeding is not an option to reduce SIDS, apply other measures to reduce SIDS (room sharing, safe sleep, etc). If breastfeeding is not an option to improve immune system, focus on the best formula you can choose, maybe donors milk,. if that’s not a possibility, then choose the best diet possible and lifestyle to reduce risks of not breastfeeding when the baby is older, etc.
If breastfeeding is not an option for whatever reason, then we should ask ourselves: “what are my options?
(For feeding, for protection, for immunity, for nutrition)

For the families who CAN CHOOSE, this info is beneficial to make an informed decision on how to feed their babies, how to prepare, and who to go for assistance.

The FACTS and benefits that breastfeeding represents are NOT an attack to mothers that CAN’T breastfeed or choose not to, they are a guide for parents to make INFORMED DECISIONS. When you choose or can’t breastfeed, you are immediately responsible of the benefits and also the risks. And viceversa. (If you choose to bf and not formula feed)

Instead of looking at this data from a visceral and emotional point of view, and immediately get our feelings hurt thinking people must be sharing to shame, we should look at it as a beneficial source to make the BEST decisions for our kids regardless other people’s opinion.

The majority of people sharing this data are breastfeeding professional with ZERO intention of shaming, but have dedicated a good amount of time to help mothers feed their babies no matter how.

Breast milk actively shields babies from various illnesses such as:

✅ Gastrointestinal Infections (Diarrhea):
Breastfeeding reduces this risk by 63% to 64% because it blocks harmful pathogens from settling in the baby's gut.

✅ Severe Acute Respiratory Infections:
It cuts these risks by 50% or more, using a maternal antibody called Secretory IgA to coat and protect the infant's lungs.

✅ Otitis Media (Ear Infections):
Babies see a 50% reduction in ear infections, as breastfeeding helps prevent fluid and bacteria from building up in the middle ear.

✅ Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC):
This dangerous intestinal disease is reduced by 50% to 77%, providing an incredibly vital shield for the fragile gut walls of premature babies.

✅ Childhood Asthma:
There is a 26% reduction in asthma cases, driven by the way breast milk regulates early immune system development.

✅Type 2 Diabetes:
Looking further ahead, it offers a 35% reduction in diabetes later in life by setting up healthy metabolic programming early on.

✅ Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS):
The risk of SIDS drops by 60%, likely because breastfeeding enhances a baby's ability to wake up or rouse themselves during sleep.

Breastfeeding is not just feeding. It’s protection 💕
